Lengthy but detailed look at DeSantis arresting 20 or so people who committed crimes who voted. They weren't suppose to be allowed to vote, but the state sent them voter registration cards anyway. This appears to be a 'tough on voter fraud' political move by DeSantis.

‘Money talks’: DeSantis goes after small-scale voter crimes, is silent on FPL and Matrix

With over one million votes cast they found twenty that should not have been allowed to vote? At least some of them asked the government if they could vote and trusted that.

Edit: autocorrect is a mixed blessing.

Part of the story from the link above.....

WHO’S AT FAULT?

Mixed messaging has contributed to the confusion, arrests and convictions over voting in Florida.

In 2018, Florida voters amended the state constitution to end Florida’s lifetime ban on voting for felons — with 64% casting ballots in favor of the ballot initiative. The measure specifically excluded those who had been convicted of murder, sexual assault and criminal sexual behavior.

The Legislature responded by requiring that felons who completed their sentences first pay all fees owed in relation to their crimes. The formerly incarcerated soon learned that there is no centralized location where they could learn what, if anything, they owed.

In a 2020 interview with the Herald/Times and ProPublica, then-Secretary of State Laurel Lee, a DeSantis appointee, said under state law it was her office’s responsibility to screen felons wishing to vote and to inform county supervisors which individuals were ineligible.

At the time Grant and the other 19 people filled out their registration applications, the state backlog to determine eligibility of felons was enormous. Until that backlog could be cleared, former felons should be considered “eligible voters,” Lee said in the Oct. 5, 2020, interview.

At a news conference, DeSantis contradicted that view, saying the responsibility lies with county elections officials. Lee is no longer the secretary of state, having been replaced in May by Cord Byrd, a former Republican state lawmaker.

Sometimes government agencies have worked at cross-purposes. In July 2020, the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections conducted a series of voter registration drives in the county jail to encourage felons who had completed their terms to register. Two years later, Alachua prosecutors charged 10 of those who registered with fraud, after a local resident reviewed the voter rolls and complained.

Yeah, I’ve read several stories like this. A sad part is that several will have to go back to prison for no fault of their own, except trusting the answers from the Florida state government.

I felt it was the beginning of the end for Rubin when he announced he was having kids with his husband. Now he's an apologist for his conservative base. As pointed out by TMP, the mediator has to laugh for his audience, and it feels like a very awkward environment.

Damage control from the Republicans, but you should hear this poop. It's pretty sad on abortion.

Federal election crimes fall into three broad categories—campaign finance crimes, voter/ballot fraud, and civil rights violations.

Campaign finance
  • A person gives more than $4,600 to a federal candidate (various limits apply for donations to and from committees and groups)
  • A donor asks a friend to give money to a federal candidate, promising to reimburse the friend, and the friend makes the donation and the real donor reimburses him
  • A corporation gives corporate money to a federal candidate
  • A person who is neither a citizen nor a green card holder gives money to a federal, state, or local candidate
Civil rights violations
  • Someone threatens a voter with physical or economic harm unless the voter casts his ballot in a particular way
  • Someone tries to prevent qualified voters from getting to the polls in a federal election
  • A scheme exists to prevent minorities from voting
Voter/ballot fraud
  • A voter intentionally gives false information when registering to vote
  • A voter receives money or something of value in exchange for voting in a federal election or registering to vote
  • Someone votes more than once in a federal election
  • An election official corrupts his or her office to benefit a candidate or party (e.g., lets unqualified voters cast ballots)
Its not just Fla,

Absolutely correct as you write, but in this case it seems that it was not intentional and they relied on information given by the state.

Yet of those arrested so far, all told Florida investigators that they received a voter registration card from their county elections supervisor’s office and believed they were authorized to vote by someone in government plus these "voters", were all included in Florida’s lifetime ban on voting for felons but specifically excluded those who had been convicted of murder, sexual assault and criminal sexual behavior. In my opinion the issue is not the "felons" voting, but the Election Supervisors office sending these people ( Felons) ballots telling them they were approved for voting. Desantis just went after the wrong people. His Elections offices are at fault and need cleaning up. “The Florida Department of State has a duty under section 98.075(5), Fla. Stat. to identify those registered voters who have been convicted of a felony and whose voting rights have not been restored,” And local Election Supervisors are noting, they were short staffed during this time, but that is not what is reported in the news. The Elections offices screwed up.

Sorry if I was unclear, but by "they" I meant the convicted felons relying on answers as well as receiving their voter registration card from the state of Florida, and when the error was discovered the consequences for the felons where draconian. There where no intent to vote fraudulently as far as I've read.

To put this in perspective: it's around twenty people among 1.1 million votes cast. The errors done during counting the votes are far larger.

Edit: grammar

Americans aren't the only ones insane, our neighbors to North have them as well !!!

Probably needs a little more exploring like legal issues school may have etc. Plus the "system" is inclusivity (ie can't just dump the LGBTQ on an island). In another article from the AC, they said along the lines of It's happening all across the country! No I think these types of examples are few and far between LOL.

WTF? Women have been tossed from Disneyland for being 'nippley' without being a workplace accident waiting to happen (getting a bit close to the chop saw blade).

In this area, it's typical to find that someone hoarded or threw boxes of ballots in the trash- it happens during local, state and Federal elections- people just can't seem to get it right.

Were the felons in jail/prison and if not, had they finished the conditions of their parole?
