I recommend you give us some more info. :D

What are you replacing? How much do you want to spend? Where do you live? (So we know what's available in your area) What are your uses, desires, and goals? Any restrictions on footprint?

I'm replacing an Infinity HPS 1000 15" 500w powered sub. And a Bag End 18" infrasub with an after market 1000w amp from Parts Express.

Since you already have an external amp for a sub, would you be willing to consider the DIY route? Which amp do you have?

I have a plate amp the Dayton Audio #300-809 1000w amp. It has developed a hum in the last few weeks and I'm done with the DIY route. Price range around $2,000 per sub. Two subs.

What are your expectations in replacing these two subs?

Clean tight and accurate low frequency down around 20Hz or lower. I want to be able to put on the opening scene in Star Trek VI and reproduce the moon Praxis exploding with no distortion. I want it to part my hair!

For two subs for 4k, for maximum performance for the dollar, I think two JTR Captivator 1400s are your best bet. I think two of these Rythmik FV18s would also be good. They would dig a bit deeper, but probably aren't as powerful overall, although they are a bit cheaper. For $4k you could also get four Hsu Research VTF15h mk2, four of those would match two JTR Captivator 1400s in deep bass and have superior mid bass. They can also get you a flatter frequency response overall if you spread them out some. They would also be easier to manage since they do not weigh as much individually and aren't as large. Or you could split the difference and get three Rythmik FV15HP subs, that would dig a bit deeper but maybe not quite as powerful overall, although more manageable in size and weight than the 18"s.

Didn't realize Rythmik had any 18s available yet! Sweet.

If you up the budget, might look at Funk or Deep Sea Sounds, too....their 21s are sweet!

A single Deep Sea Sound Mariana 24 right behind the listening position would be pretty colossal. I have experienced one near-field once, and that is something everyone should do at least once in their lives, like a trip to bass Mecca.

LOL had it wrong anyways, it's Funk with their new 21 and Deep Sea with their 24 that I was actually thinking about....currently playing with two 18s right behind my seat so might be getting in the neighborhood :)

I have a flat response down to 15hz with a pair of Hsu VTF -3 MK5 HP's. Great bang for your buck and it's legit clean bass.

*Edit: Price in the link is for 2 of them.

That's an awesome room response curve. For the OP, this shows that with some tinkering you can achieve some remarkably fine audio quality in the lower registers along with tremendous thumping ability. No need to screw the music to get the thump. Pogre has them both. Whatever he says, I'd do that for subwoofers.
