So, Monoprice was offline for a while and now has a somewhat cryptic message on their website of:
The Monoprice website is temporarily unavailable while we correct some problems and perform maintenance.
Most of the orders placed by Friday will be shipped out on Monday as scheduled.
We expect the site to be available again in 1 hours around 12PM, Tuesday, March 9th, 2010.
It may take another week or two for us to have the servers completely back up and running in order for us to take orders from customers.
Truly sorry for any inconvenience it may cause you. Thanks again for your understanding and doing business with us.
You're probably wondering why they can't take orders online for another week or two...

Well, from comments on their facebook page it seems like they were hacked and people are reporting fraudulent charges on their credit / debit cards if they ordered from Monoprice in the past two weeks.

Well this might explain a few things. I recently canceled my debit card after I noticed some random charges on it coming from something resembling Apple iTunes but wasn't from apple. I had also recently ordered from Monoprice.

They've posted an update on their Facebook page (no I can't believe I'm looking at FB either). :p
A few of our customers recently reported to us that information from credit cards they used on the Monoprice website had been misused. We promptly began an investigation with the help of expert computer forensic investigators to determine if any card data had been stolen from our computers.

To date, the investigators have found no evidence that card information has been stolen from Monoprice’s computer network. As a precaution to ensure that our customers’ information is not at risk, we have taken our website offline temporarily while we and our investigators complete the audit of our computer network.

We want to ensure that there is no security vulnerability in any part of our computer network system. We notified local and federal law enforcement agencies, our credit card processing business partners, and all credit card companies that some of our customers reported concerns regarding their card information to us.

We also advised these entities that we are working with outside security specialists to determine if there was breach of our computer system. We will post additional information when it is available. We regret any inconvenience that our investigation and the temporary suspension of the Monoprice website may have caused you. Thank you so much for your great support.

The only thing worse than being hacked is having all the signs pointing to your being hacked, but finding no evidence of being hacked. ;)

Thats unfortunate to hear Bill. Was your account compromised through an online bank account like PayPal for example or through debit card skimming?

Even better, now that their servers are down, UPS lost my order, so now they don't have the records to file the claim with UPS or send me a replacement order. I get to wait the 1-2 weeks for the servers to come back online.

The latter was the case and the worst part we lucked out only by chance...otherwise who knows. There where 4 withdraws on 3 separate occassions. With each withdraw the amount grew...we're lucky my wife decide to stop by the local branch one day..man she was in tears when she found out, what a horrible feeling.:(
Now we check all our banking and credit card transaction 10x's a day.

Regards, Bill

Is it possible that the thieves just snagged credit card numbers going into Monoprice.com without getting into their computer? If so they need to look into that.

Or perhaps they have some dishonest employee(s) who accessed their database copying the information rather than outsiders hacking their system remotely.

I am currently waiting for them to give me an RMA for an HDMI splitter that needs replacing. Hope they work out the problem soon.
