If you had $750 for a sub what would you buy?

Thanks for the laugh Cochise. Yam sub? That's funny.

A couple of words come to mind regarding Yammie subs, boomy, muddy, sloppy. If I want a Piano or Trombone, I'll head straight for my Yammie dealer. Audio? Not in this lifetime.

There are a couple things Yamaha did right, a few studio monitors, and the big man-amps from the late 70's, early 80's.

Cheers,
Russ
As far as Yamaha is concerned, I just replaced my Yamaha sound card with a SB Live, but I won't go into that.
Yamaha is one of the very few companies that do alot of things very well. Their motorcycles are second to none, same with their musical instruments and I don't think anyone here will contest the fact that their audio equipment is revered by a great number of "audio nuts" everywhere.
Now as far as Sony, is concerned....... Just kidding, don't want the Sony folks to break down my door.

I don't believe Yamaha's SUBs for the home are revered by anyone. I used to own one, and I certainly don't. I don't particularly favor their receivers either. I don't think they're junk, but they aren't on the top of my personal list for home audio.

What brands would you go with for receivers?

Really?! I didn't say they were no good.

You're the pro, eh? Well then, can we see your test results and charts comparing the SVS and Paradigm subs?

Do you think people here are going to listen to someone who says "don't look at any of those"...that they should go buy a Paradigm because you say so? And your personal insults will win you no friends here, either.

I'm a Marantz guy :) I like H/K too. The higher Denons and Onkyos are pretty solid also, but so are the Yamahas. A little off the beaten path (and $$) - Arcam, Rotel, B&K, Cambridge Audio. It depends on what price bracket too.

Well incidentally every single one of your posts have been about Paradigm since you joined, though I doubt you actually work for them given your tone and post content. It's wonderful that you like that brand, but try to be more respectful of others' opinions.

Coming from a guy who, two posts back, just said "take my advice go with the pw2100 for the money you want to spend and dont look at any others." this is quite possibly a candidate for funniest post of the month. :)

It's funny how all the new members are shooting themselves in the feet. I don't get it.

As RJBudz says "Theres no better way to get attention then a good, big mistake." (or something along those lines :) )

All this discussion of subs, and no one mentions VMPS?

I used to have an Earthquake Supernova. (Well, I still have it, I just have no use for it). Tons of power, but about as musical as a dump truck. Now I use a VMPS Larger driven by a NuForce amp. Just about as much power (ie., more than I will ever need) but clean, tight and clear.

The only issue with a VMPS sub would be the necessity of an external amp as well as an in-line signal processor to alter phase and such, like the BFD or DCX-2496.

You can get them with an onboard amp as an option; the amp they use has some processing capability. It does add to the price, though, so it's probably out of reach of the $750 limit.

Seems like a few of us looking for sub advise and quite a few suggesting the SVS, unless it's coming to Canada. Would a PB-12 at possibly $1000 CDN. to get here out perform most local units costing the same?
