If you had 5K for Speakers for H/T what would you buy?

I am kicking around the idea, or maybe the first of the year.

I have a big room, 21 x 21 x 12

There are tons of options, but you might want to start hitting dealers to check out different brands like Paradigm, B&W, Klipsch, Phase Technology, etc.

Or maybe a system like this.

The retail price for my speakers is just a bit above that, though I paid a bit below that. I bought 3 pair of Aurum Cantus Leisure 2SE (U.S. version) speakers and a Carver subwoofer that is no longer available. Now, for the subwoofer, I would instead probably go with SVS, the exact model depending on the price paid for the Aurum Cantus speakers.

If someone handed me $5k I would do 3) RBH Sound 661-SEs, 2) 44-SEs and a sub (or two) of your choosing. Add 41-SEs (more money) if you need Surround Back speakers.

I know we harp on RBH all the time, but there is a good reason...

It would be totally PSB

I would try for PSB Stratus SilverI (thinking the GoldI are too expensive for 5K) for my mains and surround and a Subsonic10 for my sub. I would power them with either Bryston or SymAudio products. I like to keep my system as Canadian as I can .

The Klipsch RF series isn't quite 5k but they are great. I just did a post on the RF-7's and I can't tell you how impressed I am with them, and I've never liked Klipsch.

For a sound system that was going to be for 80% or more movie watching I'd suggest a pair of Paradigm P90's A CC370, and 4 Titans. Get a killer sub like a Axiom 500 and you have a setup that will blow away most theatres. I did gear this to a movie setup because you said HT. For music I would suggest different things, more along the line of what 3DB mentioned.

If someone handed me five K and said I must spend this solely on speakers or no cash, I would probably go with Tyler Acoustics. Outstanding looks with the many veneers they offer, great drivers and really good sound. I would just need to then purchase a really good amp.

2 pairs of RM7s and a good sub. Then add their Cinergy 5.1 center later.

Check my sig. 5 A/V-2s would be $2250. Add a SVS PB-12 Ultra and you would come in under $5K. My room is 19x20 with a high vaulted ceiling and these guys have no problem filling that space.

I'd be on Audiogon or ebay. You save so much with aftermarket stuff. Just be careful with speakers. Electrostats. ;) You never know how much someone abused them.

New? Probably the Klipsch Reference like Mac said, or some Paradigm Reference series.

You'd have to get a dual SVS Plus or Ultra sub to round it out.

EFE baby

While there are a lot of great choices at that price point and I haven't heard most of them, if I had $5K I was forced at gunpoint to spend on speakers (o how awful  ) I would waste not a moment placing my order for a full set of Ed Frias' EFE Technology speakers. They're gorgeous and based on what I've heard of Ed's work so far with his BIC mods, I know his custom or imported speakers would be an incredible value for the prices he's charging and would sound stunning. Matched with one or more SVS subs of your choice (PB12 Ultra/2 for example, YUM), you'd have heart-stopping performance for a great price.

Here goes Ed's pricing: EFE TECHNOLOGY is now offering several new models ranging from $690pr for the new B-15 bookshelf model, $890pr for the new T-20 MTM model, $450 for the new matching C-20 center channel model, $1290pr for the new T-42 towers and lastly the new flagship T-50 towers at $2890pr.

So you could easily put together a 5.1 or 7.1 system for under $5K.

Please let us know what you decide!

I'd go with 5 M&K MP-150's. That's assuming i had a receiver/amp that could drive them at 4 ohms of course :)

I would say for $5K I would do one of the following (probably the latter, tough call though):

(1) B&W HTM7

(4) B&W 705

(1) SVS PB12-Ultra

Or:

(1) B&W LCR600

(2) B&W DM604 S3

(4) B&W DM602 S3

(1) SVS PB12-Ultra/2 (Just a touch over budget if everything was at full retail)

I now worship the ground J. Garcia walks on. I haven't heard them myself, but people I respect tell me that the JosephAudio RM7s are the finest bookshelf speakers made (Period).

J_Garcia, Can you comment on the sound of your A/V-2s compared to the RM7s?

I currently have the Athena Audition Series and crave something better. I was planning on getting Ascend CBM-170s, but want to know more about the Joseph Audios to head off future episodes of upgraditis.

The RM7s are the best bookshelf I've heard so far, hands down.

I love my A/V-2s, which share similar sound characteristics to the RM7s. The A/V-2s are all about clarity - midrange detail is their strong point; highs are smooth, clear and crisp without being aggressive (soft dome). Female vocals in particular really shine with these speakers, but they are equally at home with jazz and classical. What surprised me was that they are really good with electronic music too; I listen to a lot of techno/trance/dance (wide variety of musical tastes). I knew these were the speakers for me the first time I heard them. Danny over at GR really knows what he's doing.

The RM7s were a step up from the A/V-2s, IMO. Despite their size, the RM7s had more bass than my 2s - surprisingly deep bass with no bloat. They have an incredible amount of detail and depth, and it didn't really matter where I was as I walked around the large listening room, they still sounded great - the soundstage is HUGE. In comparison, my 2s need to be placed correctly to image well. I was very impressed with these speakers :) If/when I decide to upgrade, it will likely be to these or something else from Joseph Audio. The 7s are unfortunately twice the price of my 2s.

i second the emotion of buckeye. look on audiogon. you can save almost 50% sometime

they you can look at 10,000 worth of speakers. energy veritas, vienna acoustic, von schweikert, paradigm studio, totem, and dynaudio and lots of others. take a look. remember there is shipping though and speakers are heavy and the further away the more to ship them.

if you had 5k for speakers

Listen; Definitve Technology are definetly the system you want!!! And the good thing about it is you will not have to spend it all. Get the BP 7002.
They have a wonderfull sound stage!!! They seem to disappear in your room;
very open in projection. And only $1099 each with a 15Hz to 30 kHz :D frequency response!!!

Triad silver. In-room or in-wall, take your pick. You'll be hard pressed to find anything that sounds better at the price.
