Ideas, please. Big room, mostly movies, speakers next investment.

Hi folks. I'm new to the forums.

I'm looking for a few ideas for speaker systems, and the information out here is pretty overwhelming. Please give me a few ideas to get started.

My room is 22' wide by 24' deep. Cathedral ceiling with the low points at front and back - top height about 18 feet.

I have a 7.1 system and want to keep it that way. I have a Sony 60" LCD HDTV, Denon 3805 receiver, two HDDVRs, a Panasonic DVD player and a couple of extra peripherals. My current speakers are all vintage 1980s and 1990s Boston Acoustics (A300s and 100s, if I recall correctly), and a Klipsch 12-inch sub.

My wife, son and I mostly watch movies and sports on this setup.....lots and lots of movies of all types. Very little music, and some videogames.

I want to replace all the speakers. I don't have a set price, but over $2000 would pain me a bit. I want something aesthetically appealing (not big and black, rather honey or other light colors would work. The room has beige walls and white trim). I usually prefer value to lowest price or highest quality. That is, I would rather buy better quality used or discontinued for a lower price if it gave me more bang for the buck.

Can you help me id systems for further research? If my price is too low, I would consider adding the sub later.

Thanks in advance.

$2,000 can go a long way.
for the size of your room two subs *may* be in order, but as far as systems, Axiom and AV123 could be some places to start looking. as far as colors go, cherry might be easer to find, say maple (JBL used to). :(

This is a nice system, but I dont know how it would fill a room that big...your budget is VERY low for 8 speakers in such a large space.

Question about Mordaunts.....

Are the new ones 902i, 903i, etc. significantly better than the models that are being phased out at large discounts?

Check out

audioadvisor lots of good speakers Boston, Energy to name a few. I could show links but there's alot of options! In that room you'll need one big sub that's for sure. I'd go for floors with dual 6.5", as well. Good Luck.

2K buys a pretty big game.

For mostly movies....and keeping that in mind. I think 2K buys a lot of game here.

I would spend it roughly at ~ 60% sub and speakers ~ 30% for the AV receiver and the remaining 10% or so on cables etc.

http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/enthusiast2.html is one package that is simply tremendous.

My next choice and maybe even better is the SVS Sound system for about the same price. You just wont need to get a better sound and sub for movies from either supplier - both built like tanks and for heavy duty sound. They both play loud and can be upsized to 6.1/7.1 if you want to...

Now music is another matter - I do have a separate 2.0 system for that. And that is quite a bit more expensive....

Good luck....all good suggestions for this thread.

Speaker options

I think that the Yamaha sound projector might work for a small bedroom, but not in your huge room.

AV123 is running a couple specials to reduce inventory before they move to a new headquarters. This package is right inline with your budget:

The floorstander will play pretty low, but it does not include a sub. The real rosewood veneer should also meet your asthetic requirments.
