I'd like to know what you think (B&W speaker issue):

Small update.

I continue to be much happier with my B&W's. I'm going to rest me ears until tomorrow and see if I feel the same way again. If so, the world is a better place. :)

One strange thing I've noticed. I went through all kinds of music tonight with the changes and I really like the way things sound. However, I did run across several recordings that came of very bright and borderline harsh. I was surprised at this. How could Nine Inch Nails improve so much yet other recordings possibly not? Just seems strange. Maybe those recordings are just weak in the midbass?

One thing is for sure. Nice gear makes great recording shine, but nice gear also REALLY reveals all the bad ones... Why does there have to be so many bad ones?

It's called bias. You mind will make the difference.

I would at very least try some acoustic panels behind the speakers. This is the one thing that made the biggest improvement in my system. I had to try a thousand different ones to pass the WAF but in the end, found some that worked out.

If you find some recordings are harsh, it is probably because of the B&W's relentlessness on poor recordings. If you play an 96kbps MP3 and a well mastered and recorded CD of the same material on Blose speakers, they will likely sound almost if not completely the same. You do the same with the B&W, they are going to show you just how bad that MP3 is. Some CDs just aren't mastered or recorded well. A lot of CDs are victims of the loudness war, where all levels are the same throughout the whole CD and sometimes clipping (not from your amplifier) in the recording is evident because the levels are all maxed for highest output (thanks iPod generation, you are doing us all a world of good:rolleyes:).

I'm happy to report that running through Nine Inch Nails albums this morning has yielded very good results. I forgot how much I like Pretty Hate Machine. The music is very good and it's the experience that it should be. :)

Imaging is just great. I still don't know just what made me put them on axis a few years ago. I'm really not inclined to change the speaker's positioning at all after listening last night and this morning. Who knows, maybe a couple of years from now I'll be posting something to the effect of: "I don't know why I didn't toe these speakers in more years ago..." :D

I'm planning to passive bi-amp them today for grins. I'm going to see if attenuating the tweeters a bit makes any favorible changes. I plan to make only the slightest changes as things are very acceptible right now. Tweaking is fun anyway...

Before anyone comments on my bi-amping being worthless, I'm going to figure that one out on my own. My Emotiva amp is a class-H that has 7 individual amps each with it's own power supply. I'm only running a 5.1 setup and I just can't stand having to amps with nothing to do. It just seems criminal. :D

Thanks again to you guys for saving me about $2,500.00 on new speakers. I like to upgrade my stuff just to have something new, but these B&W's are very satisfying now and I really don't want to mess with that. Besides I've only owned this Emo gear for about a week now so I have that to be new and I'm thinking about a new TV...

Sounds like you have a plan, be careful not to overdrive your speakers, the MPS-1 and MPS-2 amplifiers from Emotiva are very powerful.:)

That is very much so your opinion, which you are entitled to. However, NIN is typically well recorded and mastered material (that is as much a fact as anything). We also enjoy listening to it.;)

Sorry, the two names together just hit my funny bone, and I couldn't resist it. I still think I'd prefer the proverbial root canal though.

No worries. I only have the IPS-1 amp (150wrms x 7 @ 8ohms). But I'll still be carefull. I really don't listen too loudly; just loud enough to sound clean and clear (my wife thinks this is too loud).
