HI,
i am currently in a market for a cd player, top of mid range would do it fo me probably. Is there a lot of difference in the sound quality in this area trough digital output? i would also prefer something compact design like the Denon or Teac players out there but not essential. if i am looking at the 2nd hand market what brands/models i should look for? and what year? is it worth getting a model from early 2000 or lets say stay in the past 10 years timeline?
Or maybe a dvd player? as i won't listen to cd-s with the tv on, but rarely playing a dvd might be an extra feature (twice a year probably :))
Thanks
Here’s a thought I’ve had with CD players. I’m a network engineer by profession. Having this in mind, the coax/fiber out from the CD player is just digital data. No sound, just data into your preamp. So every cd/dvd player will be equal sound wise. Now for longevity, I’ve had a Denon DVD 900 for twenty years. It just won’t die.

So, it's been 2 months, did you get your CD player ?

yes and no, but also yes :) i've got myself an x800 but i realized it is not the best as a cd player only. too circumstantial, no led screen showing which track played etc. It meant to be used with the tv what i don't want, and the streaming and other features also done by the tv and receiver, so i dont really need that kind of device. o i get rid of that and i pick up a sony cdp-xe510 in mint condition with remote and manual for a fraction of the price of the x800.

I think this older post helped me a bit. I started listening to CDs again a bit and found with some the audio quality was much better than I would get out of Itunes. However that's not the case on all of them. Some seem to be recorded better than others but that's another point.

What I did today was A/B a bit the OPPO 83 DVD player I generally use (hooked up via HDMI) to my receiver vs a Sony UHD player.... As you would expect, didn't notice any improvement or difference. I assume that's because it's a digital transmission of the 1's and 0's that my receiver translates right? In that case, as has been mentioned, you could get a $5 DVD player from Goodwill that would do the same I'm guessing. So I guess I'm a bit less bullish on finding an improvement over the OPPO i'm currently using.

I guess it's more of a sharing than guidance or a question.

But I guess the question I'd ask is if you all disagree and when is there really a difference? Is it running analog via RCA into the receiver and going direct? Frankly I run Multi Channel Stereo so would that even work if you have to select direct? Sounds like a PIA frankly to change from what I have so only willing if it's a difference maker.

All have a good weekeend

The late Ted Perry, founder of Hyperion records, use the say, "The ability of a CD player to play most discs is inversely proportional to its cost! I think he was right.

If it is only CDs you want to play, then the cheapest with an HDMI output is what you need.

If you want a universal player, then that is another matter.
