Wow. This site is pretty cost concerned for the most part. Someone should have asked the budget, but you pointed out a couple of low mid fi units so it was only natural to assume that was your price range. I personally could care less about the HD codecs. I don't like action movies, or watch concert dvds, and average about .7 movies per week. I don't even care about HDMI-for all the reasons you just cited in your system. The two systems I have heard in homes with the HD codecs sounded great. Could I tell the difference to the old formats? Meh. I don't know.

But if money isn't an issue, why bother with low priced box store gear. Read the reviews for the Yamaha RX-Z11. Or go with seperates and get a Onkyo Integra 9.8 prepro and a nice amplifier. Either of those units will do the HD codecs just fine, and launch the space shuttle if you have the right remote.

I apologize for my negative attitude. I just felt like this was one of those, "I just want others to confirm my beliefs", threads. I have been all backwards for the passed few days and I apologize for jumping at you. There was no good reason for me too do that, I was in the wrong (very much so).

Back to business. I have only had to opportunity to listen to 2 channel Dolby TrueHD, and too me it sounds better. I hear dynamic compression with standard Dolby Digital, I do not with the lossless codecs. You are asking for a receiver that can do this, the RX-V663 will be the best in budget killing terms, of course there is always better stuff. What series Polks are you using? You might need a more powerful receiver such as the RX-V1800 or Onkyo TX-SR805 for example. The H/K AVR-445 is a rather hefty receiver and should have no trouble powering any Polk speakers I have seen, the Onkyo TX-SR805 and Yamaha RX-V1800 would be more in line with it in terms of power, with an edge to the Onkyo for power. The Onkyo runs very hot and many people don't like it for it's heat, size, and HDMI issues.

That's nice of you too say. I try to be nice, it's just hard sometimes. It was nothing against viper personally, I was just in a very rare mood. I hardly ever attack others when I am having personal issues. I was very surprised at myself for those actions.

Mostly I don't want to make anyone angry enough to just up and give up or leave this forum because of my illogical actions. I wish you the best of luck with your decision Viper.

I don't think you "attacked" anybody...it was just frustration... a little "Abbott & Costello" trying to get the right info, all the way around. The thread was a bit confusing at first. I don't think people realize when they post that what is very clear to them isn't always to others. Especially with this type forum where specs and price range are very important to know.

You're one of the members who answer a TON of postings, with very clear understandable, great advice. Which is why I like this place so much. Some of the reading I do is very confusing to me, I don't get all the "tech lingo" (maybe thats my female DNA ) but you guys make it very easy to understand here.

I hope this forum is still alive. I understood that forum members have agreed Yamaha RX-V863 does not deserve the extra cost then 663. I will have B&W 683, 685, HTM61 and ASW610 5.1 set recently. With which AVR should I run them? Yamaha 663, 1800, 3800 or should I prefer Marantz 7002 or 8002?

The B&W 683 is 8 ohm nominal but 3 ohm minimum impedence. That would suggest that it needs a fairly robust amplifier. Both Yamaha and Marantz only rate the 3800 and 8002 into 8 ohms, although they may operate just fine with the impedence of your speakers. I would also look into the Onkyo 876 or 906 just for the simple fact that the manufacturer actually rates the amplifier into lower impedence loads, including a 3 ohm dynamic load. If nothing else, it indicates to me that the manufacturer is confident that it will handle that load without issue. Just my humble opinion.

Can anyone that has had the "regular" audio codecs compare that to the HD versions? I'm not asking for people who are splitting hairs here..I don't care about the older formats and how "great" your system sounds. I'm really looking for someone with "real life" experience to tell me that they can definitatly tell the difference between the HD-Master and TRUE-HD and all the other formats available as opposed to the DD PX2 and all the other.

IMHO, splitting hairs is what you are going to get when asking what sounds better.

IMHO, a receiver that decodes the new audio formats via HDMI is the only way to go. (Provided a purchase will be made from today and on)

IMHO, the Denon 2808CI is the best $600 receiver available.

From what I have read the 863's amp section benchtested unfavorably to the 663, which makes no damn sense.
