How to make a Denon 2808 child proof?

How can I or can it even be done to set up the reciever so that the kids can play their WI, or PS3, or just watch TV on the Samsung DLP HDTV? I would still like to use the PS3 to play Blu-Ray in HD movies with HD sound ect when I want. Thanks

Do you want to set it up so that the kids don't need to turn the receiver on to do those things? If so, perhaps you could connect those components directly to the TV using different connections than the ones that you used to connect to the receiver (I'm borrowing Seth's great idea from earlier today).

Yes I want the kids to be able to play or watch TV without TOUCHING the reciever. So do I for example run the PS3 via componet to TV and also run the HDMI from PS3 thru the Denon 988 reciever? Then the question is also for just watching TV? I read somewhere on a post that the Denon988 woud do a pass thru. on the last input it was left on? If I always reset to TV after using it would this work? Or am I smoking something funny? How about a HDMI switcher? If so what do I look for? So many qusetions I know but I realy appreciate and resepct eveyones input. Thanks

The wii will be easy if you just hook it directly to the TV.

Does the TV have HDMI inputs? If so I would assume you can run an HDMI switcher in reverse, so plug the output to the PS3, then one input to the TV one to the reciever. (I haven't tried it before so someone that has an HDMI switch may want to try it before you buy one.)

Are you trying to set it up so the kids don't use the reciever and speakers when playing games?
Or are you just trying to keep the kids from touching the reciever and accedentally changing a setting?

If its the case than there should be a settings lock on the reciever that let you change inputs but not make many other changes. My onkyo has that feature so I assume the dennon will have something similar.

If you just don't want the kids messing with settings, but don't mind them just using the receiver, the 2807 at least (what I have) has a setting that allows you to basically "lock" the settings with a password so nothing critical gets changed...that, coupled with a universal remote where the kids can just push "Play Game" or something similar would be the easiest solution.

To do what you want, you need to have everything run through the TV and then an output from the TV to the receiver. Unless your TV has HDMI out, I would think you would stand to lose quite a bit of sound and picture quality just b/c of copyright protection crap (high def over component, I think it, at best, is 1080i, but in some cases may only be 480i/p?) and you would be limited to DD and DTS tracks for audio b/c of the limitations of optical outs and digital coaxial outs...

Not really. He can connect everything to both the receiver and the TV (as mentioned above) if he has enough connections.

I like your idea about the universal remote with the single button push! That's a great idea.

Yes the TV does have mulitiple HDMI inputs but no HDMI out. Good idea about the universal remote but these kids have a bad habit of leaving component equipment on after turning off TV. (Along with the fact they like to push buttons(mine inc.:) they are 5,7, and 13 and of course anything they see big sis do they figure they can do also, so by making it A.Easy and B. Where they do not have to get fustrated trying to change from TV to games or vis versa I accomplish several good things.) So no since wasting electricity all day or night. The TV also has several component inputs. But HEY you folks are great ! I realy appreciate the ideas! Thanks.

If they like pushing buttons, make it impossible to get to. You can use one of the personalized setup buttons for a small universal remote, which can be programmed for only specific functions. If they can't get to it, it has no menu button and only what they need, nothing will be messed up. Use the second zone, if necessary. You'll need to get used to not pressing any buttons, though. You can also limit the max volume for the kids' settings, too. That way, you won't come home to woofers that turned inside out and kids who went deaf because the volume was WOT.

Well, if you had the universal remote, as long as they used it to turn everything on and off, it would power down everything that uses IR (unless you get a fancy one with bluetooth as well, lol). You can limit the functions available in the menus of all the universal remotes I'm familiar with (Harmony series), so that would help keep them out of stuff as well. Anyway, just my thoughts.

Well it looks like hard wiring the system so they can continue to do what they do (turn things off and on at the source) is out from what I hear and a universal remote is in?

+ one on universal remote

I purchased the Harmony one and all I or the family needs to do is touch the screen for watch tv, watch blu-ray, watch hd, or play x-box360, all are labeled on remote so it turns on that function. Very easy to setup also. Then I lock the denon where nothing can change except for the volume. Hope this helps.

It would be my suggestion to use the universal, yes. Ease of use shoots up for everyone as far as daily use goes. Only time you will probably break out the original remotes is when you want to tweak settings.
