How many speakers can i hook up?

Say I want to have a 5.1 surround sound home theater in the living room. But I also want to run a few speakers to the kitchen too so people in there can listen as well.

Not another 5.1 setup in the kitchen, but just some stereo speakers or something.

Is this possible? Which hookups do I connect it to from the receiver?

It is possible, but depends on your receiver. Some receivers have multiple zones for that specific purpose. So if your receiver has a zone 2 you can just hook the kitchen's speakers up to the second zone go into the setup menu and set it up appropriately.

Also, some 7 channel receivers allow for channels 6 and 7 to be used as a second zone. Consult your user manual to see if your receiver has this ability.

A receiver with zone 2 capability is the best option as you could have different sources playing in each zone. But you can still do it if the receiver does not have zone 2 by wiring the kitchen speakers in parallel with the front speakers and buying an impedance matching volume control for the kitchen.
