It won't matter to Drumph - but it will matter to the rest of NATO... and it will impact on how they respond... and it is likely to matter to some of the Drumphettes advising....

Pretty much nobody (except other fascist dictators) liked Maduro - most Venezuelans hated Maduro - and there were no complicating major military defence alliances... And as has been clear for a long time, Trump and co completely disregards International Law. So some downside in terms of international soft influence... but the USA under Trump has already completely trashed the US reputation - nothing to lose there!

An invastion of a NATO member by default declares war on the invader by all NATO members. That is the underlying principle of NATO - the question is, what if the invader is themself a NATO member?
Regardless of the answer to that question - the complications with invading a NATO member are several orders of magnitude greater than those of invading a standalone South American dictatorship.

Fortunately and unfortunately, it can't be explained and needs to be experienced. I'm my life, I've seen horrors that make words feel useless. Things that people in first world nations pretend doesn't exist. Nature is cruel, but not done with evil intent. That's only something humans can do.

Eh, anyway. This is a hobby page. Why discuss something so terrible? Thank god for music. I'm heading back over to the "what are you listening to now" thread. I'd suggest we all take a breath and do the same. Save the news for the 5-6 pm hour. You get local news/weather/sports followed by 5 mins per national story all done before dinner. There's no way to get upset with anything in 5 mins. My $.02 anyway.

While there are more than a few people in MAGA-land who would be onboard with invading Canada and/or Greenland, I really don't think it will happen. While the Trump administration is steadily sabotaging its relationship with the rest of the liberal democratic world, such drastic action would be the last straw. He would be declaring war against two NATO allies - thus, war against all of NATO. Russia would then invade the Baltic countries, China would invade Taiwan. Trump may be incapable of thinking beyond his next BM, but I have to believe there are sufficient adults in the DoD to strangle that idea in its crib.

In the heydays of the soviet union, the top ruzzian military ordered a nuclear rocket attack towards Norway, but the general managing the nuclear arsenal refused to follow the order and neglected it, possibly making him susceptible to court marshal.

In retrospect it was shown that the rocket alert that triggered this was a false alarm. The alert was caused by a scientific rocket launch, which was announced, from the scientific base of Andøya in North of Norway.

History does not repeat - but it sure can rhyme...

Look at Kaiser Wilhelm... a close relative of both the Russian and British Royal families, and a total nut job.

The British were more concerned with their traditional enemy, the French, rather than the Germans... many British elites had German friends and family...

But Wilhelm had very similar character traits, and attitudes to Trump... and ultimately, he led the world to WWI... and ended up at war with countries that otherwise might have been natural allies.

Now we have Trump, Greenland/Denmark and NATO....

Trumps inclinations would be to ally with Russia (he is far more aligned with Putin, than with the EU!!)... his process of pushing NATO and the EU ever further away from the USA has been an ongoing project.

Now it is likely that NATO will deploy a brigade in Denmark, under Danish control.

This could easily result in a USA vs NATO war.
NATO is Russia's natural opponent - does Russia then use that as an opportunity to attack from the East?

This sort of combination could easily be the spark that lights WWIII.

China's focus on Taiwan, could place it in opposition to the USA - and the Chinese / Russian situation has always been "sensitive" - the Chinese could become NATO allies against Russia and the USA. (this is no stranger than the bedfellows that WWI and then WWI created!)
