Personally I could never just listen to Jazz or just rock. I NEED it all!! When I started to see the big connection in music is when I really started to love music. What would I give up?? Jazz,Rock,Funk,AfroBeat, Jam Rock, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Pop Rock,Bluegrass,Ska,Techno,The Disco Biscuits(the one and only)???

None I love them all. I think it is funny as hell when people say "oh I hate such and such genre". the is amazingly talented people in all genres you just have to look....:D

W I D E. I don't particularly like hip-hop/rap, but I wouldn't shut out the genre. There are definitely some talented artists and I don't mind listening to it. It's the pointless "smack my crack ho, go kill a cop" stuff I don't get into. Same goes for country. I don't really dig that whiney, "I'm drunk and sad" kind of stuff, but there are a few artists here and there that I like.

It would not be uncommon to find Tool along side Loreena McKennit in my changer at any given time. I listen to Jazz, Techno/Trance, some classical, rock / alternative, punk, classic rock, some metal, female vocals, 80s, etc...

There is no genre that I would completely pass off as there is good music in all of them.
I listen to classical (from renaissance to neo-classical), jazz (from early big band to fushion), rock (from heavy metal to classic to christian), blues, techno, punk, some rap, and some opera. I don't own any country music but there are quite a few songs that I enjoy.

If I had to pick a specific type of music, I would pick classical (the period or the genre, depending on how specific my selection had to be)

P.S. I think it is also funny when people claim to hate a specific genre, because most of the time those people have never really "listened" to the music. Sorry to go on a tangent here but it is my pet peeve when people don't "listen" to music, it's just background noise to them and it drives me nuts, when I listen to music I listen to it and focus the vast majority of my attention to it. If I can't focus on it enough, I don't listen. For instance, I never listen to music in my car because I focus on the music instead of driving. Sorry about the rant, I just get pissed off when people treat music as mindless background noise.

I pass off all genres cept Underground hardcore. :) I hate main-stream as there is no talent at all.

It basically depends if their is any talent. I was in a band, and I know when people are actually working.

My tastes are pretty broad, but not inclusive of all. I don't listen to Gansta Crap or much country, nor can I stomach Raggea. The bulk of my collection is comprised of classical (everything from Gregorian Chant through the Romantic Era, with a smattering of modern composers such as Howard Hanson and Aaron Copeland), bluegrass/newgrass, rock & pop (which runs the gamut from JaMC to Slayer to Depeche Mode to Duran Duran to Built To Spill...). I do like a lot of jazz (although I'm not a diehard fan- I really love Holly Cole, DK, etc. My favorite 'classic jazz' artist is Brubeck, and I like Sonny Rollins a lot), and limited country (mostly Johnny Cash).

That is absolutly untrue. why does good music have to be underground? I admit much of what I listen to is not well known but I appreciate good music whenever I hear it. Example I have been very happy that The White Stripes have been so popular because Jack White is a very good song writer and plays a wicker blues guitar. They are a very talented band period it does not matter how many people like them.

nor can I stomach Raggae
I just vomited in my mouth by thinking of never listening to reggae again. Buy "The Harder They Come" double disk soundtrack. If you don't like it I will buy it off you.

I like Reggae :) Bob Marley did some great stuff that literally changed music at the time.

I'll have to see if I can check thouse out. A buddy of mine turned me on to Immortal Technique. He's a little rough around the edges, Eminem style (not a direct comparison), but also very political and seemingly well read and versed in current events.

My primary listening focuses mostly on the Techno and Alt/rock/indie stuff, so that is the majority of what I own.

Now Playing: Massive Attack Heat Miser

Not to turn this into a pissing match, but to me Bob Marley is one of the top five most overrated musicians in history. I'll need better than that to turn me into a Reggae fan.

Preferably something that doesn't sound like Reggae.:p I'm closer to 40 than 30, and I doubt there's many Reggae 'artists' with recording contracts that I haven't heard.

But I'm sure we'll try to convince each other we're right for another 10 pages! One thing I've learned is that pop music is 95% personal opinion and taste. You can no more convince someone to like something than you can talk them in to liking liver.

I'm not going to try to convince you :) You listen to what you like and I'll listen to what I like. Just like you wouldn't convince me that chant is really worth listening to :p

Now Playing: System of a Down Hypnotize

LOL! Now that was funny.

Maybe the monks can just record a chant version of System of a Down's She's Like Heroin :D Not exactly a good song, but funny, and it would be friggin hilarious to hear a chant version of it.

I listen to mostly late 60's-early 70's reggae. More in the original ska vein.

I doubt there's many Reggae 'artists' with recording contracts that I haven't heard.
I really hope your joking with this statment. reggae is not just Bob and Peter you know.

Also we can't argue about it because you have never heard the stuff I am talking about. If you haven't heard of "The Harder they Come" then you haven't heard the best reggae out there.

i like pretty much everything with exception of rap, country & pop music,im not a big fan of reggae either,i do like 1 artist from rap (blowfly) & 1 artist from reggae (dread zeppelin) but that's about it.

jazz, fusion jazz, 60's rock, 70's rock, blues, classical, female vocal, soul, funk, instrumental, r & b.

i go in spurt's where all i want to hear is one certian type of music, right now im going through a spurt where all i want to listen to is rock music & heavy metal at obscene volume level's but that could change over nite.

You definately aren't getting it: it's not that I haven't heard Reggae, it's that I don't like it. No offense meant though if you do.:) Marley isn't even the worst of them, just the most overrated.

As for that soundtrack, I have never seen a movie by that name. Most soundtrack albums suck, and since I despise all of the voluminous quantity of that genre that I have heard, it's not a stretch that I won't like that one either. What's the movie about? Is it a concert movie? Who does the music?

Ah to be "closer to 40 then 30" and know it all...

Its a classic movie about the jamacian music industry. Its not really a good movie. the soundtrack is by some of the biggest names in reggae.
Jimmy Cliff
johnny Nash
Toots and the Maytals
Desmond Dekker
the Slickers

Whatever its no biggie we all don't have to like all music. I do have no clue how anyone can dislike reggae though. What do you find offesive about it??

So which is the sure sign of knowing it all; having the audacity not to like Reggae or the temerity to disagree with you?

Such a fool I am. Surely you know my tastes better than I! How arrogant of me to assume that I'm qualified to listen to something and make up my own mind about what I like.

You truly do know it all!
