I just watched the remake of Amityville Horror and it has some really good "jump out of your seat" and "stay awake at night thinking about it" parts. I wasn't expecting it to be that good.

The orginal Exorcist is really great too, the extended edition has all kinds of "hidden" scary stuff like faces in the shadows and whatnot. its great.
its not a movie, but If you can, look for the real story of Amityville Horror. A documentary of the "true story". It plays around Halloween and totally freaked me out. I think it was on the history channel or A & E or something like that. it may have been Histories Mysteries??? Im not sure but keep an eye out for it.

Exorcist, Event Horizon and The Shining!!!

I'll second even horizon as a really scary movie, also evil dead 2 is a great movie the best scary one of the three. Army of darkness isn't really scary but is a classic.

Hmm, I never found Event Horizon that scary. I kept waiting for it to get creepy and cool, but it just never did. IMHO a big letdown.

Here's a third vote for the original Halloween by John Carpenter. Also, 1980's Terror Train with Jamie Lee Curtis .

Evil Dead (all 3) - can't go wrong with a THX horror movie.
Final Destination 2 - The crash scene is great for new teenage drivers
Exorcist (remaster) - An all time classic
Phantasm (all) - can't beat the Tall Man and brain drilling balls
Darkness Falls - nothing like the Tooth Fairy to warp a young mind.
Amityville Horror (old) - GET OUT!!!!!!!!!

Way too many for me to list. I was always partial to the "B" horror movies.

Try Bubba Ho-tep - classic Bruce Cambell

I liked Event Horizon (actually saw that in the theater), but I though it was pretty much just Hellraiser in space. Only a few scenes that were unnerving, like when he's crawling through the duct and the chick with black eyes is there... Not really on my list of good scare movies though.

Phantasm - good catch.

The first few Nightmare on Elm St. flicks were great, but as mentioned (and just like Friday the 13th) they beat those both to death; to the point where they aren't fun anymore. The first Halloween is pretty good too.

For those of you who like The Ring and The Grudge and you haven't checked out the original Japanese versions (both are remakes) "Ringu" and "Ju-On", they're worth checking out too.

"Klaatu, Barada, Nikto"

I also think the first Candyman is a good one for this time of year.

Would you believe a Disney movie?

"Something wicked This Way comes", a Ray Bradbury story starring Jason Robards and Jonathan Pryce. No blood and guts but heavy on atmosphere, psychology and other halloweeny stuff.

Oh, and the Hellraiser series, particularly the earliest ones. Talk about two different extremess, eh?

Frankenstein with Boris Karloff
Dracula with Bela Lugosi

...and for a little comic relief:
Ghost Breakers with Bob Hope.

Nah, I'm not THAT old - just nostalgic.

And don't forget The Warewolf. If you are looking for movies to watch for an All Hallow's Eve bash with kids it's hard to beat the trio of The Exorcist, Poltergeist, and The Omen to really scare kids without too much violence and gore.

I do not know if I would classify it as horror, maybe suspenseful Sci-Fi, but Event Horizon scared me the first time I watched it. Completely alone at home, late at night. Rainy outside. It really set the "mood".:)
