Hoping for Advice in Beginning New 5.1 Setup

I'm am a non-audiophile who enjoys listening to music. After many years of waiting, I am getting ready to build a 5.1 system. To ease the financial pain, I am looking to start with two bookshelf speakers and a center. My thought is that in phase two of my purchase, I will get two floor standing speakers and have those same bookshelf speakers become the rears. I enjoy a variety of rock music (Metallica, Korn, Foo Fighters, Pink Floyd, Doors, Zeppelin, etc.), so I am looking for something that will sound great with this type of music, but have the capability to transition to movie watching. Music is the first priority...then movie watching. I figured my budget at between $2K - $3K. I have been doing much internet searching and am growing increasingly confused. Any help/advice/speaker suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Behringer B2030P. Use this for L, R, Center, and surrounds. Get two respectable active subs such as the SVS entry level units (about $400) each. Use one on each side of the room. Get a respectable receiver, preferably factory refurbished for greater value. Add in some room treatments from GIK Acoustics (these are critical to added SQ). You can achieve quite the system for a relatively low budget if you pick the right parts. There really is no consumer available speaker that will even come close to the ones I recommened above unless you spend several times the $$. The SVS subs are recommended because they have the highest level of real/measured performance for the $$ spent. There are only a handful of subs at that price that can compare to the SVS. You have more flexibility with the electronics.

An added benefit of the Behringer speakers is that with some minor (and easy) modifications, you can substantially improve their SQ beyond stock form.

You don't need floor standing speakers. Not when you have two subs, one near each stand mount, to perfectly supplement the LF range.

If you prefer something a little more living room friendly. Look at Ascend Acoustics. Epik has some great deals on subs too.

Thanks! I did explore the ascend acoustics site a little bit. I'll check out Epik now too.

two subs may be a difficult sell to the wife!
I understand that, but if you get a couple of small subs you can use them as stands for your Left right speakers. ;) This will net you better sound than a single odd sub placed in a wife infuriating place usually.
