I'm gonna vote used gear.
I think you could get a nice sub and an acurus a250 two channel or an a200 three channel amp for that thousand clams.

Yeah, room treatment just doesn't sound all that exciting compared to subwoofers & amps.

But one of these days I will also do room treatment.:)
It doesn't sound exciting on paper. But wow does it make your SOUND exciting! Experiencing a properly treated room is really a treat.

Oooh! Now that's an interesting idea too. Hmmm.

Yeah, if you look at my list of gear, the Acurus was bought used for under $500, the Denon 3910 was about $650, and the Sony 53" was $700, all used, all mint. I also have a ton of other gear bought used that isn't in the rig right now.........

Many here knock ebay, but I have had good luck for the most part. Just buy from people that have a lot of positive selling transactions.......
Audiogon is kind of the Holy Holy, but there, most of the people don't have a lot of feedback selling stuff.
In used gear, big plus if they have the original packing. And it doesn't hurt to ask for a double box on top of that.......

Well the wife approves of the sub purchase *trumpets trumpeting!*

We actually looked at some finish options on the SVS site, so that's when you know it's a done deal! :)

Sub + amp

If you decide on one of the entry level 10" or 12" subs from SVS, you might have enough money left for an Emotiva LPA-1 amp.

New sub on the lower end of the spectrum like JC mentioned (and will still be an improvement from no sub), and then pick up a used amp....should be able to fit in your budget and quality used amps are more easy to come by.

i would suggest 100%-150% of the budget be poured into the sub purchase (1k right?)

the PB12 Pluses have some sort of sale right now ...
or you can go for the best (flavor of the month) the PB13 Ultra

buying the best now will actually save you money in the long run.

If this guy is in, say, a 13'x15' room, there's no reason to spend $1400 on a PB13 Ultra when a sub half the price will be able to blow out his windows just as effectively. The money would better be spent on a midrange sub and an upgrade in some other area.

oops I never saw his room size ...

aside from massive output:

the PBUltra will provide low THD, very good power compression ratings, very nice front firing look as well :)

I second that. Or is it third?:)

---> DefTech SuperCube III (650-watts RMS sub) for $575 (brand new) & $425 for an Acurus A200x3 amp (used/eBay).

That's a great point. Must have treatments.
I also noticed that movie theaters have acoustic panels covering the entire two sides of the room. The back, front wall, & ceiling don't look like they are covered with panels.
