Hole-burning pocket money...

Mkay, this is a rare one.

I have unloaded some prized musical gear and now have "fun money." I am a father, and those other parents out there know just how rare it is to have money that doesn't have to feed someone or pay the mortgage.

SO. In anticipation of having about an extra grand - that's right, roughly $1K - burning a hole in my pocket, I am drooling over the prospect of new a/v gear (no really Seth? Wow!).

Here are my thoughts:

1.) I have not taken either the red OR blue pill. I have resisted delving into HD movies. BUT, the prospect of Integra's forthcoming DHS-8.8 (HD DVD player) is very enticing!

2.) I do not currently own a sub, and yet I love movies and music just about as much as anyone. I have been eyeing subs from SVS, Velodyne and HSU, and contemplating what a fine addition a sub would make.

3.) EMOTIVA. Talk about best bang for the buck! With the money I have, I could get a second quality processor/amp combo, or get a slamming amp to accompany my Denon receiver.

Just for the fun of it, I would like to have your thoughts as to what you would do with about one grand's worth of coin (assuming it was "fun money" for you too).

You might just influence my decision!

Me personally, I'd go with 2 or 3 (amp) :) Since you have no sub at all, I'd be leaning towards 2.

Hands down you should get a sub, I think if you have about a grand to blow you should pick up the new ultra for SVS. You will wonder how you ever lived without a sub after that...

Gonna be hard to pick up an Ultra for $1k :) How big is your room? The choices for subs at $1K are pretty darn good, but you may not even need something of that caliber.

True, but if its burning a hole he should get rid of it fast, and who knows more money might get stuck the the burning pile ;).

When I posted originally, I still had the pre-order price in my head, perhaps a HSU VTF-3 with a turbo, if the toilet look is liked :p or a non-monster from SVS.

I agree with getting an awesome subwoofer 100%! The HDDVD can wait. The amps won't make nearly as much of a difference compared to a sub. Subs all the way! But why not get one subwoofer and blu-ray + hddvd? The BD + HD = $630, so do you think he can get a decent sub for $370? Or maybe just get a BD for $400, and get a sub for $600? Or a HDDVD for $230 and a sub for $770?

A home theater without a sub??? That's just wrong on so many levels.;)

I would say definitely get a good sub. Something from SVS, Hsu or Velodyne would fit the bill nicely. Also consider that Emotiva is also offering an excellent dual subwoofer system for about $1K, if you don't mind waiting on the pre-order list until closer to Christmas.

Sub for sure, but if your room isn't too huge and can get away with a $500 sub you can also pull off a HD DVD or Blu Ray player.

Get one of the premium finish SVS PB12 Plus box subs, they can be had for $898 shipped. That still leaves $100 to go buy some dvd's with good bass

Don't skimp on getting a killer sub like one of those, you will have excellent sound quality, and plenty of headroom.

If you don't need more power, then the sub is the EASY choice.

just fyi, Outlaw's best sub is offered in a combo deal with the Velodyne SMS-1 BM unit for a total of 1k. (I believe a total of $250 is savings?). I also believe that the sub was designed by Dr. Hsu? Just one of many possibilities :D

Yeah I heard about their foray into speakers from the AVR rant. This interests me. But Emotiva's site doesn't say anything (yet) about speakers. Where can I get more info? Maybe just email them, I guess!

Ok. SUB SUB SUB it is! Thank you my audioholic bretheren for the input! :)

I am trying to avoid spending any more $ on my stereo for as long as I can. Next time I do, though, it will probably go toward room treatments (something often recommended that I have never tried.)

Yeah, room treatment just doesn't sound all that exciting compared to subwoofers & amps.

But one of these days I will also do room treatment.:)
