Holding Off on Blu-ray and thinking OPPO

...If it takes 50 seconds to load the disc, I'm okay with that...
I think my Toshiba HD-XA1 takes 2 mintues to load a HDDVD movie. And I knew that before I bought it too. A lot of people take longer than that to use the bathroom and wash their hands.:D

Panosonic DMP-DB30 is much faster loading ...

It takes 20-30 seconds. if you want really fast, the PS3 uses brute force processing speed and does it in about 10 seconds

I was out of it for about 8 years.
Yeah, I was out for a while too. I really lost all interest for a long time. I truly thought my audio hobby was gone for good -- until I listened to some DefTech BP speakers at a friend's house.:D

I think the PS3 is a great machine. It's a great super computer. I just wished it looked more like a high-end blu-ray player, instead of a video game console.:D

My thoughts exactly. Both the Panny and the Sony players just look like nice high end a/v equipment. The PS3 looks like... well... a toy... a reallly really cool looking toy, but still a toy. It's the right look for the gaming market because it's got that super sleek high end look for it's purpose. It just doesn't fit appearance-wise in a rack of high end equipment though IMHO. It's too bad that Sony doesn't put the same hp in their standalone players.

Yeah, not to take anything away from the PS3.

It is a pretty looking component.

It is a remarkable component.

I don't know of any other component in the world that can upgrade from plain DTS to DTS HD-MA with a SINGLE firmware. Truly amazing!

But certain/specific looks/aesthetics weigh very heavily in my book, and I just could not get pass that.

Well, okay, the fact that it does not have a 5.1/7.1 analog output really turned me off too.:D

And maybe that "DENON" logo wouldn't hurt for me either.:D:D

You know B. you make a compelling case for the PS3, maybe I should stop, smell the coffee and spring for a PS3, I'm of the camp that the PS3 is "just" a game console, maybe I should reasses my prejudice.
I felt the same way (I was looking forward to the new Sony 550, but didn't want to wait until Oct/Nov time frame) so after some research on several forums I took the plunge and bought a PS3.

I am extremely happy I did. Blu-ray player, DVD player, CD player, SACD player, gaming console, internet browsing capabilities (with built in WiFi at no additional cost... take that MS). This thing does it all and does it well. It outperforms my Denon DVD-1930CI (which I bought a couple of years ago to bridge the gap until the format wars were decided) in DVD playback (both audio & video).

Consider this, if the trend should go the way of online content downloads, you're covered by replacing the stock 40/80GB hard drive with a higher capacity notebook HD
(I put a WD Scorpio 320GB SATA drive in my PS3 before I even connected it to my AV system). Talk about future proof.

I have only owned my PS3 for 7 weeks or so. And, in that time Sony has released 2 or 3 firmware updates for it improving functionality and adding features. Yes, you do sacrifice some connectivity, but other than that the overall value of the PS3 practically makes it a no brainer!
