Hisense TV and Surround Sound Setup

Hi, I'd love some help with my hooking up my older surround sound to my new TV. I just bought a new Hisense 55U7G and I want to connect it to my older Samsung 5.1 Surround Sound HT-E4500. I get that its super old I just don't want to toss it away for no reason. I have tried connecting it via HDMI but the Samsung unit is not ARC compatible. I've also tried connecting it via an optical cable but again no success. It maybe my settings, have played around with no luck. Has anybody got any answers? Rang Hisense and they were no use. Asked on Reddit and they just said “change your settings”
Any help or where to go for help would be much appreciated!

Two questions, did you read the manual and are you sure the soundbar still works?

Did you go into to your TV settings and select Optical out for Sound? Typically it would output VIA HDMI by default.
1) Look at your user manual or download from the web and look at how to set sound output with your TV
2) I have had a few optical cables go bad on me, so you might want to check that with a different cable.

Yes I’ve read the manual for both. Have tried all the prescribed methods for connecting the two with no luck.
Surround sound system (5.1) definitely still works and the optical cable is good as I was using them both the day before with no problems.

I have read both manuals. The optical connection should work. You must select the optical out in the audio setup menu. In addition your Samsung HTIB does NOT support bit stream, so you have to select PCM out from the optical out of the TV in the set up menu. If you do that it will work unless your Samsung has a fault.

Oh cheers. I think maybe I am not selecting the optical out on the Samsung. Definitely selected PCM the hisense but obviously not the corresponding selection on the Samsung. Thanks for your help. I’ll try it tonight and let you know how it get on

Thanks for having a look at the manuals. Did what you said re the optical cable. Selected PCM on the TV but the PCM option is greyed out on the samsung. Unsure what to do next

That is odd. The manual did state that the TV could output PCM. However that did surprise me, as I was thinking that the TV likely did only output bit stream. I suspect there has been a firmware change, and your TV does not output PCM.

If that is the case, your only option is an optical to analog converter and then use the analog inputs on the Samsung. This will only give you stereo sound.

I think this is now the time to get rid of that old HTIB.

I strongly advise you do not replace it with another HTIB, they are absolute junk. You can not salvage your speakers either, as they are ALL three ohm and not compatible with anything else.

So if you want good sound, then you need a receiver and need to go speaker shopping. Sound bars are just a modest, if any improvement over the TV speakers, but also usually include a very nasty sub.

Cheers for all the help. Yeah it’s all a bit of a cluster. Hate throwing out tech but that seems quite likely.

Noticed when playing around with it that when the tv and surround sound are set up as discussed via optical cable and hdmi - the volume cannot be changed via the tv. And turning the tv on via the tv remote will also turn on the surround sound system. So the two are “talking to each other” just no sound output

Yes, they are connected. However the problem is that the DAC in the Samsung HTIB does not have the correct codec to decode Bitstream. Unless you can get the TV to send PCM you will be out of luck. Now you have a new 4K, TV if you can afford it, splurge on a decent sound system. The pleasure good HT systems can bring is truly immense.

Your HTIB does have an HDMI out, so another solution would be to stream from a device like ROKU and connect your streamer, and cable box to your HTIB, and forgo using the TV apps and just use the TV as a video monitor only. However my recommendation, funds permitting, is to seriously upgrade your audio system and move to a well engineered AV system.
