Thanks for having a look at the manuals. Did what you said re the optical cable. Selected PCM on the TV but the PCM option is greyed out on the samsung. Unsure what to do next

That is odd. The manual did state that the TV could output PCM. However that did surprise me, as I was thinking that the TV likely did only output bit stream. I suspect there has been a firmware change, and your TV does not output PCM.
If that is the case, your only option is an optical to analog converter and then use the analog inputs on the Samsung. This will only give you stereo sound.
I think this is now the time to get rid of that old HTIB.
I strongly advise you do not replace it with another HTIB, they are absolute junk. You can not salvage your speakers either, as they are ALL three ohm and not compatible with anything else.
So if you want good sound, then you need a receiver and need to go speaker shopping. Sound bars are just a modest, if any improvement over the TV speakers, but also usually include a very nasty sub.
