High-end Speakers in a small home

I guess what I'm looking for is information about how to place high-end speakers in a

I just inherited a set of Thiel floorstanders that were $4000 when they first came out. They sound great, but.. I have them in a not-perfectly-sized room. Kinda awkward space. With furniture other than a single listening chair.

The walls angle strangely and on one side, the side opposite the speakers, there is only a half wall. I'm in one of those new houses with the "crow's nests" on the second floor.

Anyway, I found this article on AVguide about speaker placement for these high-end, stereo speakers. But it doesn't help me if I have an awkward-shaped room. Anyone out there

Pictures and/or Diagrams and a link to the speakers would all be helpful. If we don't know what you room looks like how can we help ;).

If you aren't a critical listener, then critical placement won't be killing you. Now if you are saying that you want to work towards better listening conditions there are a TON of options and things to think about including room treatments.

Well, I'm not a critical listener... yet. But I'd like to work toward that.

I'm also willing to invest in room treatments. More than anything, I just want to hear these speakers the way they were meant to be heard. I heard them in my uncle's house once and was blown away - he has a special listening room. I'm just not getting that here at my house.

Do you think the room layout affects it that much? Would you say 25%? I just need a basic analysis... if the room layout is only letting me hear 75% of how well the Thiels perform, I can better determine how much to invest in the room. I think I'd be happy with 90% performance.

I'll work on a diagram and attach. Thanks for any thoughts. Especially if someone else has made a room fit the speakers.

You may not get 90% in a difficult room, but even at 75% those speakers are likely such over achievers that even that would be better than most speakers out there and can be easily appreciated :D Did you also inherit the amplification for them? Placement is going to be key and then addressing things like highly reflective materials (hardwood or tile floors, windows, etc...). Take your favorite music to listen to out and start listening...then start making placement adjustments. It took me weeks to find the a spot I liked for my speakers in my current room.

Seriously, I have no life.

As jgarcia mentioned, room is a major factor along with the speakers. Since you have good speakers, the room is the next biggest issue to good sound. Everything else is pretty low on the totem-pole:D
