Help with Yamaha TSR-700

It sucks that since let you power the front speakers with another amp using the pre-out, they can’t use the internal amp to power the zone 1 speakers and offer a 9.2 system with no additional cost (except for the other amp cost)

I agree, but they aren't going to do that in a receiver at that price point. The signal is still hitting the front speaker terminals when using the pre outs so nothing else can be assigned to or connected to those terminals when using the pre outs.

Now, why can’t it automatically select which zone to activate depending on the source? Do they actually expect end users to remember to go to settings and change which speakers to use or even know which to use when???

Well, depending on source material and DSP settings, it will send the audio to the appropriate speakers if nine speakers are connected to the unit and amps are assigned accordingly.
