Just received my 2805 and trying to set it up with all my components and my surround sound. The manual isn't very good at helping you through what cables are best, etc. Do I use components, s-video, optical. Is there a good place to go for setting up the 2805 for best 5:1 surround sound and what is the best way to connect my cable box and DVD?

It would help to post what equipment you have. The AVR2805 is a great receiver. Enjoy it once you figure out how to hook it up.

For video, if your TV supports it, using component is best. S-video is the next best thing.

For audio use digital when you can (optical or coax doesn't really matter)

I'v setup my system this way
- video goes directly to the TV (less of acable mess, less components traversed by the signal)
- audio goes both to my receiver via digital outputs and to the TV via whatever other output the componet has (makes it easy for kids to use the TV and I have the better sound when I want it)

Just got my Denon AVR2805. I have hooked up all of my equipment and am having a problem. My DVD player is hooked up to the receiver with Component Cables and my receiver it hooked up to my TV with component cables. How come when I am watching a DVD the master volume does not appear as an on screen display, but with every other input it does?

My understanding is that the character generator in the Denon can only generate a 480i image.

If your source is not 480i, the Denon cannot overlay graphics on top of the image.

I belive the receiver CAN switch to a graphics-over-black 408i image when you're watching a non-480i source. Your TV would have to lose sync of the original program material, then resync to the 480i character generator image. Some TV's apparently don't do that all that well.

Any suggestions on how to do the character over black setup? i'm running component onlythrough the avr2805 to a screenplay sp4805. when i try to bring up the OSD it just freaks out.It will work on composite input/component out though. but as soon as i run component from the DVD, no go.
source material is PAL, and i believe the DENON OSD is NTSC, i'm sure this won't help
