Hello All , I recently purchased a new in the box never opened Kenwood KT-5500 and a pair of Realistic PA-25 also new in the box. I thought I would be able to plug the speakers in and go ! But to my surprise the receiver requires an amplifier or a preamplifier in order for me to use it. What do I need ?

Seriously, I have no life.
Hi. Welcome.

What did you think you were buying with this ancient component? What are you after. I am surprised there are still brand new, factory sealed components still available.

It seems to be an AM-FM tuner only. You need a receiver for this tuner. Perhaps you can find a Kenwood receiver in your budget.
Good luck.

You are correct ! The box clearly says Am-Fm Tuner ! I just jumped the gun. I thought I was buying a unit to just plug in the speakers and go. So when you say I need a receiver, can you expand on that ?

A receiver is the combo of pre-amp amp and tuner in one box (a receiver can also be thought of as an integrated amp that includes a tuner). You still need either an integrated amp, as you already have the tuner, or another receiver but that may depend on your budget, etc. What will your sources of music be? Just radio? Or also digital cd/streaming, etc? Record player? All that needs to be taken into consideration so you get the connectivity and results you need with the next purchase....

Another option is a separate pre-amp and amp (power amp).

You need a receiver, or preamp and amp. If you buy a receiver, your Kenwood you just bought will be redundant.
