Help picking

My brother just bought the Sony receiver strdh520.

Its a big room 20x12 is about rite 20 foot long 12 ft wide

Yeah a nice home theater setup is number 1 maybe a liitle music here and there

I was thinking 2 Sony towers up front with the 2 Sony center speakers
2 Sony book shelf speakers as middle speakers and 2 Sony book shelf speakers in the rear
And the BIC v1220 sub and maybe use the other ones to in different locations of the room
to keep it room filling

Anyway, if it were my money, I'd be looking at the Hsu STF-2 ($319+$43 shipping) and three Ascend HTM-200s ($428+36 shipping), and then use a couple of the Sony bookshelves as surrounds. And maybe return that Sony receiver and pick up something a bit meatier like an Onkyo TX-NR609 from accessories4less.

You could set up a rear center and have a 6.1 setup, although the value of this setup is debatable, especially with a room that isn't terribly wide.

You don't want a second center up front.

Generally it's recommended to stay in the same brand and series when buying speakers for surround sound. In this case it's throwing good money after bad.

At least buy new, decent, front 3 speakers. The Sony's can pass for surrounds until you decide they don't.

Okay so what would be better set up polk or infanty and how much better would it be then the sony set up.

I would probably opt for the Infinity setup between the two. I'd expect such a setup would deliver quite a bit better audio quality than the Sony speakers you're looking at. However, my advice would be to start with a pair of P163 bookshelves and see what you think as compared with the Sony bookshelves you've got now.

FWIW, don't know if you've got a Fry's in your area, but they've got a pretty good sale on Infinity speakers going at the moment.

Finally, instead of getting a pair of floorstanders, I'd probably get 4 bookshelves and a center, and put the rest of the money into a better subwoofer.

Wouldn't be my first choice, but as long as you don't push the volume too much, I'd guess it would do alright.

I think what is frustrating is that you did indeed accept no advice on here at all in regards to the speakers you purchased. I understand trying to use what you have, but having an 11.2 system of crappy speakers is not worth the hassle, nor is it fair to your ears. In all honesty I would return what you have purchased, get a much better receiver from Yamaha, Denon or Onkyo and heed some of the speakers advice on here. I would much rather listen to a good 3.1 system than an iffy 5 or 7.1 setup. I know your brother likes Sony, and believe me, there are many worse brands. But I just listened to a guy that cannot believe how good Bose is, and how when you get to their level you start talking about some really hq systems and it hard to find comparisons. I will never get back that 15 minutes of my life, never, ever.....ever.

Same setup as before. I can get the infnity towers on ebay for the pair for 425 shipped. Or just do 8 bookshelf speakers like you said. The infinty center speaker seems way better then the pioneer so i am kinda leaning that way,
