I shut off the surge protector the avr was plugged into and turn the sub off via the switch on the back. Not sure what the issue was but glad the thump is back.
So still a soft reset, which makes more sense since the power off is really just a return to standby....they're somewhat glitchy computers, every now and then need to reboot 'em with a soft reset.....
