Help! No output from subwoofer.

Earlier this week, I got a new receiver. It’s an Onkyo TX-NR7100. I got it all hooked up and everything seemed to be working fine.

This morning I went to listen to some music before work and my subwoofer isn’t working on certain sources. I can’t get any output from my nvidia shield or airplay. It works fine when using my TV’s built in apps over ARC. It also plays the test tones so I know it’s connected properly.

My mains are set to small so that’s not the issue. The sub is an SVS PB-1000. I’m out of ideas as to what’s causing the issue.

But maybe a fuse hidden somewhere, have you called SVS they have a good customer support group

I’m pretty sure it’s not the sub since it works on at least one source and plays test tones in the onkyo settings.

So any particular sound modes or codecs or is it random?

I cycled through the various onkyo modes for music and none of them had output from the sub. I tried using amazon music and pandora but I’m not sure whats codecs those use.

When does the sub work particularly with what codec and sound mode? What were the available modes for music?

I went on the built in Youtube app on my tv and played a bass sweep video and the sub worked fine. I don’t know what codec YT uses. The sound mode of the onkyo was set to stereo which is what I also used when using the shield/airplay. It seems like any source over arc works but non-arc sources dont.

If you have basic YT it's just a 2.0 lossy codec source. Shield output audio settings are what particularly? You're not using a direct mode?

Do you have another source to go to avr directly? Disc player? Streamer (physically connected)?

I spun up my blu ray player and put in a disc with the THX optimizer. When it went through the speaker test tones, I could hear sound from the sub but it was very faint; even with the sub volume knob maxed out.

But regular test tones when you calibrated it originally was fine? You shouldn't have to adjust gain/volume on sub for a different source...

ps by setup did you run AccuEQ and or Dirac or ?

Yeah the test tones during calibration were fine. If I go in and adjust the levels, it sounds fine. Normally I wouldn’t adjust the sub for different sources I just wanted to make sure I was actually hearing the thx tones and not imagining it.

Don't have any particular ideas for you except my usual fall back when an avr is doing unlikely/unpredictable things....run a reset (soft to start, hard/full reset if needed). Unless you're just expecting more from the sub? Or you've had a sub for a while and this is definitely new behavior with the new avr?

Thanks for the help. Im going to unplug everything and see if that helps. If not I’ll do a factory reset. I’ve been trying to avoid that so I don’t have to rerun dirac as it takes a while. I’ve had the sub for a while and this is definitely not typical performance. It’s usually shaking the pics on the wall but now, I got nothing.

Good luck....but makes me wonder if Dirac has something to do with it?

I think it might but with all the new settings this thing has it’s hard to tell. I upgraded from an 11 year old TX-NR609 and it was much simpler.

Seriously, I have no life.

You are correct, it is NOT the sub, as that would not be selective. I would try a hard reset of the receiver. Unfortunately you bought an Onkyblow. I think that was a risky move.

I had my previous onkyo for 11 years and it still works. Only upgraded for the newer features like atmos/hdr.

Well I turned everything off for a while then back on. Boom it works! Damn gremlins must’ve got in there.

I shut off the surge protector the avr was plugged into and turn the sub off via the switch on the back. Not sure what the issue was but glad the thump is back.
