55' and 9' away. WOW, that would be a problem. Oh, I get it, you meant 55" and 9' away. Just kidding.
Most people here would say 2 to 2.5' of the screen. But they would be wrong.
Granted I sit 15-16' away from a 120" DLP projector/screen.

Anyhow, I suggest you read this. It is not only for computers, it gets into TV viewing.
This is what the Assc. of Optometrist say, (and clearly sounds very much like your problems)
http://www.opto.ca/en/public/04_eye_info/04_02_05_computers.asp
Oh, I did mean 55", oops. So, 10 ft. away I'm only suppose to have a 24" or 27.5" television? You got to be kidding. I found this website: http://money.howstuffworks.com/tv-buying-guide1.htm. With those numbers, I should be able to have a 60-70". This one said it would be ok as well: http://www.myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html. I think I'll continue with the assumption that I can get a 45" to 55", as anything over this seems to be too close to the minimum.

I do notice with candles lit and things, it isn't as bad headache wise. So, I think I'm going to get some picture lights or uplights like I have in my living room. One of the issues can be resolved.

The SXRD is by far a better choicethan replacing the hitachi.

No SDE, 2ms response time, 13,300:1 contrast ratio, No rainbows, 1920x1080 resolution, excellent user menu, quality remote, good color, no burn in, no magnetic fields disrupt it, good viewing angles and excellent fill factor.

I am not surprised it looked better than your hitachi RP-LCD considering it beats it in almost everyway.

I own a Sony RPLCD and a Sony SXRD, both are 60'' and I can tell you from viewing both everyday that the SXRD is a far superior set. If you have the money than go for it. I cant recommend it enough.
I went to the store today and spent over an hour re-examining the options. I still am not overly impressed with the Mitsubishi DLPs or Samsung DLPs, granted the store doesn't have every model. Any specific models that would be the best to look at for an accurate comparison?

The JVC DILA and Sony SXRD were on the top of my list. Plasma and LCD flat panels still a bit out of my price range. Do you notice any ghosting or anything with the Sony SXRD? After getting a price reduction on the hitachi, it would costs me about $800 to upgrade to the 50" Sony SXRD. I did call Sony and there isn't an option to input 1080p, which is bothersome, and that they can't disclose any future plans. They told me if I want to input 1080p I have to get Qualia if I want to input 1080p.

Sorry no I was not kidding. That is why I had said the Association of Optometrist has this recommendation.
I did say Granted I do not follow this. But It may be the cause of your headaches.
Personally if I could get away with 200" at 18' away I would do it.
In your case, I think I would surely stay away from DLP.
It may be a good thing you are looking only at LCD.
I had recommended as well to check out this - http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/avhardware/DatacolorSpyderTVreview.php
But I may have deleted the post (I do that sometimes)

Also no big deal - But that is why I have my signature.....
Clearly I know nothing.

Anyhow it was just a sugestion. Sorry I could not be of assistance to a lovely lady....... ;)

We've noticed its a lot less fatiguing (sp?) to watch movies with a light on in an adjoining room or hallway. I saw several recommendations saying to put a soft light above and behind the tv. I assume this would apply doubly to LCD-RP since they seem much brighter than my DLP.

Thanks everyone. Watching movies and shows with some light on definitely seems to have reduced the strain on my eyes, I didn't seem to get headaches last night.

I'm thinking I'll just go ahead and retry a different Hitachi. They are nice TVs. Of course the Sony does look better, at 40% more in cost, though, I would expect it to deliver more. As SXRD is a newer technology for Sony, I'm not sure I want to take the plunge yet, especially since you can't input 1080p into this set. I'm thinking I could save the $800-$1000 towards a new TV for the living room in a year or two that does facilitate 1080p inputs at a much lower cost then the new 1080p TVs that are coming out now.

I am suprised that no one mentioned the fact that 8% of the population cannot watch a DLP tv due to the Rainbow effect. I install TVs all day long and I have a hard time even tweaking a DLP TV up in a dark room. So I am one of the people that falls into that 8%. So I bought a JVC that uses the 3 chip LCoS technology. The only problem with it is that it is a tad on the bright side. Not too bad after I adjusted it with DVE.

It sounds to me like you are another person that falls into the 8% category. So if you haven't already returned your TV maybe you should go ahead and look into the Sony or JVC LCoS sets. Just because you get headaches from watching DLP doesnt mean the technology is bad. It just means you won't be able to enjoy it like other people do until they improve the technology.

Not a major deal Griff - And I am very suprised I did not state that as well.
But I am assuming she had already read about RBE with her statement.

The good thing is that the number of people have dropped, that are affected by it. With the faster wheels.
Its to bad that you are affected.:(
My LCoS suits me just fine. :)

I haven't noticed any change in the RBE from DLP's in the past couple of years. We sell quite a few DLPs at work and not one customer has complained about rainbows. So maybe I am one in 1,000,000. Hmmmm To bad I don't have this kind of luck with lottery tickets. Oh wait, I guess you have to buy a ticket to win....
