Help a audio/ video moron out

I am a complete moron when it comes to AV so please keep it simple. I do not have a complete home theater set up but I do have a older (10 years old)Kenwood reciever with dolby ect.. I simply just want to hook my TV to my receiver so that I can hear my TV thru my stereo speakers. The connection on the TV look pretty clear but what am I looking for on the reciever side. Is this a 2 jack red / white connection on each end ?

The TV must have audio out jacks. All you have to do is run audio cables from the left (white) and right (red) audio outs on the TV to ANY analog input on the receiver - you could use CD, Tape, Aux, or even the audio portion of a jack marked 'video 1'; you cannot however use the jack marked Phono.

One additional consideration is the TV volume control. The TV might have two sets of audio outs - one marked 'fixed' and one marked 'variable' (or there might be a switch or menu setting to specify whether you want fixed or variable). You really want to use the fixed output so that the TV volume control has no effect and only the receiver's volume control affects the volume. Variable will still work but if the TV volume is all the way down, you will hear no sound.

Some TVs also require you to turn OFF the TV internal speakers to activate the audio outs.

Its a new TV. SO I can hook into any of the jacks on the reciever Tape, CD ect. ?

If I buy a 5 speaker package to utilize the surround sound feature on the receiver would I hook up to back of the receiver any different than what you descibed in you earlier post ?

No, the speakers are connected to the speaker terminals on the receiver and that is not related to how you connect other devices to the receiver. Any signal coming in to the receiver will be amplified and the sound output through the speakers.

I didn,t explain myself very well. I know the speaker come thru all the speaker terminals ect. . I was asking more about the interface between the receiver and the TV. If I hook up a 5 speaker package for surround sound use to the correct speaker terminals on the receiver do I need to hook up the audio cables any differently than what you have expalined above. For example , do I still plug my audio cable jacks into say the CD , DVD , Aux. jacks ?

Yes, as I said the speaker connections are not related to how you connect other devices to the receiver. Run the audio connection from the TV to the receiver and you'll get the sound from the TV.

If yu have a cable box (or satellite TV receiver), you can hook the audio-outputs directly to the Kenwood, and won't need to hook them to the Tv at all (This is what I do).

I agree R&R Ninja, less cabling involve to the tv just video! no need for the tv speakers haven't heard a set with anything remarkable yet...

Need help with setup

Hi, I have this setup in mind for my new LCD (should get it by the end of the month)
HD DVR connected to the LCD via HDMI
DVD player /Recorders connected via HDMI
xbox via component one
playstaion via component two

What can I do to make the sound a bit better. The TV speakers are ok but I want something better. I have a small room and can't have an elaborate system that will rock the house.
If I get a cheap HTIB (200-300) and just hook up the digital audio out (LCD TV) to the digital audio in (HTIB receiver) will this work?
