Hellllp! Have old speakers, need new Receiver

Greetings all, just signed up to the forums.

I have a question that may or may not have already been answered in this forum. But, this is the most extensive site I've seen on such matters, so here goes....

I have a pair of Sharp CP-9860(WD) speakers. I love them, cause they work exceptionally great. They came with a matching receiver/amp that has kind of worn out their welcome, however.

What I'm trying to do is match a more modern a/v receiver up with these speakers. I'm not trying to break the bank, mind you, but here's what I need to hook up to said receiver, along with the speakers:

Vizio 60" LCD (monitor output)
CP-9860(WD) speakers (Audio Output)

DirectTV Genie (input)
Older DVD Player (input)
Nintendo Wii (input)

I got the specs on the speakers off the back of one of the boxes. They are as follows:

Rated Input Power - 150w
Peak Input Power - 300w
Impedance - 8 ohms
(Equipped with Audio Reset Circuit breaker)

I have no idea on how to get all of this accomplished in one affordable box. I looked at the Denon AVR-E400 7.1, but I'm not sure if it will do what I need it to do with the speakers.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

You can run a multichannel receiver in stereo mode, no problem. The AVR-E400 would be fine. The E300 would probably be fine as well, and would be cheaper. Up to you whether the additional 20% cost is worth the 15-watt-per-channel gain.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say you're not sure if it will do what you need it to do with the speakers. What do you need your receiver to do with the speakers, besides what all receivers do with speakers? Are you asking whether the receiver you chose has the appropriate inputs to handle the DirecTV tuner, the DVD player and the Wii?

What I guess I'm asking is that with that receiver - will I have enough wattage to run the speakers I currently have?
All of the reading I'm doing is that each channel has to have enough wattage to push to the speakers. How do I know if each channel has 150 per channel and so on?

Your sharp speakers are rated to handle peak watts of 300. Under normal listening conditions your receiver will only be pushing a few watts. Any receiver you choose can handle their 8 ohm load fine. Now the choice is what features you need and want at what budget. The e300 is a fine candidate.

You'll be fine.

You're suffering from a common misconception many people have about speakers and wattage.

Just because a speaker is advertised as being able to withstand a certain namount of wattage doesn't mean it need that to play well and loud. A car may be advertised as being able to go 130 mph but that doesn't mean it needs to be driven at that speed to provide satisfying performance.

While a speaker may noy go up in a puff of smoke immediately if you feed it that wattqge, it'll sound bad long before it's absorbed that power level. And, I can guarantee that your old system never came even close to putting out that kind of power anyway.

I think I was suffering from information overload, LOL. I didn't think I'd blow up the speakers, but I wanted to make sure there was plenty of power in the receivers I was looking at. Much of the info I was looking at would start out with very informative info, but then it would go way off in left field where I'm not ready to go yet.

Is there an A/V for dummies link out there somewhere? LOL

Also - is that a picture of Roman Maroni you have there?

Actually, the home page onf this site has a wealth of information available towards the bottom of the page. Here's a link to the "Frequently Asked questions" for a starter.

And, yes, that is Roman Moroni, from one of my all-time favorite good-time movies. If I could change the caption/title, it would be "Fargin' Icehole" instead of whatever it is now. Many would say that's more fitting.
