I have had a 120mm 12V PC fan wired to a 6V power supply sitting on top of my Yamaha receiver since day one. Half the voltage keeps the fan completely silent and keeps the unit running totally cool to the touch even under the most demanding load. I've had it for 7 years now without a single issue. Extra cooling will never hurt.
