Interesting. The fact that they've gotten to 30GB (so I'm guessing six layers) isn't too bad, especially if that's all on one side. Based on the production challenges of getting to dual-layer, two-sided (so, four total layers) DVDs, I'm guessing that going from six layers to the theoretical twenty layers is going to be quite difficult.

I would say the chances for success of a third format at this point is probably very close to zero. I certainly wouldn't invest any money in it.

I completely agree which is why I find this so odd. The biggest question I have is what studios are they going to get to support them. This topic is something they are being very tight lipped-about too...

I get a feeling that in other parts of the world, it might be a factor. Us against them.
It appears that there may be more support overseas companies. Just what we need, 3 competing formats.

Next thing we know Sony will release another HD format just in case they will win with BD because they just aren't used to winning format wars :D. This way they can win and lose all at the same time!

Seriously though, whatever jackass thinks its going to help consumers by adding yet another confusing craptastic format to the market should be shot especially this late in the game. If it really is as cheap as they say it would have made a difference about a year ago, but now WE JUST WANT ONE!!!

Most likely this new format, if it gets launched at all, will fizzle out. All things are against it: Two competing formats with an uncertain future, big corporations behind those formats and the clincher: major studios (money) supporting each format, an indifferent public with no interest whatsoever in the existing formats (except for early adopters) and a tightening economy. I think they're done for!;):D

They also seem to have a format, but no definition of the interface/software has been released. If it's simply a bigger, multi-layered DVD technology no one will go for it because the DVD DRM has been cracked already. I have already asked for more information - we'll see what happens but I'd give it about as much chance of making headway in the CE market as I give of Brittany Spears winning a Nobel Peace Prize.

One thing that may happen is their layering tech might get bought out and used elsewhere.

Nice to see you guys are on top of it :).

I just can't believe there is another company out there actually wanting to get into this mess that is the format war. Maybe he is on crack or something....
