HD DVD or Blue Ray better than Denon 2910 ?

I got into this crazy home theater thing about 3 years ago when I was about to buy a HTIB or a Bose and this site saved me and I ended up going seperates and couldnt be happier. I need some advice again please. I have a Denon 2910 and after seeing all of these HD players and Blue Rays I was thinking maybe I should sale my player while I can still get a decent prise for it and pick up a cheap HD or Blue Ray. Is that a good idea? Can you still play regualr DVD's on HD's or Blue Rays ? I have over 250 DVD's and I sure dont want to start collecting again.

Then if I should buy one which should I buy and why ? I figure I can still get close to $300 for mine so I could maybe go $400 for a new one. Any suggestions ? Maybe i should just keep what I have I just dont know if I am missing much.

Without question either one is better than the 2910; it isn't even close with the best examples of either format. $400 will buy you a decent player of either format, though there are HD DVD players that are going for less than that. What you need to look at too though, is which format currently has more movies you want to watch. Yes, both will play DVDs fine.

Blu-ray, not Blue.

Thank you for the info. I think I will check into the Blu-Ray players (I got it right this time ) since I hear that they have more movies available at a good price. I guess its time to take some pics of the Denon and head to ebay. I will hate to see it go since it was my first qulaity DVD player. Thanks again for the information, its very much appreciated.

Whether you are a gamer or not I would recommend the PS3 as the best Blu-ray player on the market for $400 especially with all the deals it has going on right now. I own one and love it check it out. Its incredibly easy to use especially with firmware updates and has tons of extra functionality that is great.

Amazon had the Samsung 1200 for $337 I believe, though I it looks like that sale is over now. The BDP-S300 is $399. The PS3 is a good choice if you are a gamer and are interested in things other than just a player (internet, music streaming/storage, etc....).

Note too that you also get at least 5 free discs with either format currently (by mail).

You know I never thought of that idea. I have actually been thinking about a PS3 or some gaming just for a few games. I just never thought about them being a good quality player. Hmmm, something to consider. Thanks.

It is a very good quality BD player. I've been using mine for a year now and I am very pleased.

Thanks again to both of you. I am checking things on ebay as we speak to see about what I can get for mine. I like the idea of a ps3 because it kills 2 birds with one stone so to speak. Once I have one I can play golf year round. LOL I really appreciate the input.

PS3 (80G) plays SACD, though it will only do multichannel via HDMI. No DVD-A on any HD players though. That is why I still have my 2900, for DVD-A and SACD.

As someone who has both, I would agree with John and say that you should find out which format has more of the movies you want. Image quality is pretty much the same between the 2. I do like the way my PS 3 functions as a Blu-ray player better than my HD-A3. So I look for Blu-ray discs first, HD-DVD's second. But that's just my personal preference.

Once you see a movie in high def, you won't want to watch SD any more. I've been trying to sell a bunch of my old DVD's on Craigslist for weeks. I bought Stealth not just once, but TWICE!!!

I just started watching HD-DVD for a coupel weeks now that I got my 1st HDTV.
And agreed, netflix is GREAT!
Been using Netflix for a few motnhs now using Standard DVD and now getting HD DVD from them.
Hoping to save enough for a PS3 so I can watch Blu-Ray movies also

But with an HD-DVD player, it upconverts standard DVD pretty well

Are you the type that just doesn't buy DVD's in general? I'm not replacing my entire collection, just the ones that are reference material, or that I really like. I'm the type that will watch a movie multiple times, so I tend to buy a lot of them.

Right now, I have probably 30 Blu-ray discs and about 5 HD-DVD's. But I do rent a lot more than I buy.
