I'm confused. What is fw 2.0? Firmware? How can it play blu ray discs if that is what you are saying?

The Blu part was a joke... Just firmware 2.0 available for these players.

I was thinking Toshiba actually did some sort of miracle getting software to somehow read the blu laser. ^_^ It shows 2.8. Is that the same thing?

No, frostbyte. 2.8 is for different models. But the 2.0 does play blu ray. :p jk

Thank you John, I checked only a few days ago and it was still ver 1.3. I am downloading it right now. Did you notice any difference with 2.0?

PENG and dnice: the biggest improvement is 1080p 24 Hz (for those with the 3:2 pulldown issue)...but this is not for the A3 (never supported 24Hz), it is meant only for the A30 and A35. 10 second load times (door opening) has been reported as well, but as I have yet to run mine, I'll have to let you know.

Additionally, per Toshiba's website: "...improves network connectivity for supporting the download of web-enabled network content associated with certain HD DVD discs, and also addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related issues identified by Toshiba."

Sounds like a winner. Toshiba keeps up their support, and HD gets it again. :)

Too bad my 47LX196 does not support 1080p input let alone 1080p 24 Hz. For now I paid extra for the A30 for nothing other than it has the so called "deep color" that the A3 does not. I did have the A3 for a day and I was happy with the picture quality anyway deep color or not.

By the way, I tried both regular DVD and HDVD, the load time does not seem to get any shorter with 2.0. I was hoping for audio improvements but I guess that will never happen because they want us to buy the A35.

Thanks again.

Just as a note, many folks over on AVS have been reporting bugs with this new firmware and 1080p/24 on discs with VC coding. Seems it introduces jaggies. Many are reporting that 1080i looks better than 24. They were not having any problems with the previous version:confused:
Just a heads up. If you don't use 24, you should be good with 2.0.

Be careful with this update. Seems it intruduces jaggies on some content. The 2.8 update for the A2 and XA2 players does the same thing (I'm staying with 2.7 for my A2 and XA2 for now).
The problem has been reported to Toshiba.

EDIT: DUKESTER beat me to it.

The report is by one poster only at avs. Other members there have reported no jaggies with 2.0. He reports jaggies in chapter 5 of Transformers where Bumblebee's hood transforms...anyone else?

And just so we're clear: One doesn't have to be too careful because the fw in no way harms the player. One can also convert back to 1.3 if the jaggies (only on 1080p/24 Hz by one member thus far) are problematic.

Let it also be known that this member is in contact with Toshiba to see if in fact it is a problem, and if and when a patch will become available.
