Hey guys, I noticed something while watching Batman Begins on HD-DVD (HD-A2 player). When I bitstream via Toslink either Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby True HD, my Rotel 1068 indicates the signal is DTS???

Does the 1068 think the signal is DTS due to the higher bandwidth signal or is something setup incorrectly?

Since the audio data cannot be transfered at its full bandwidth the A2 downsamples the audio from an HD audio format to the highest possible bitrate format which is DTS. So you are getting a higher quality version of the audio then you would from a DVD, but it isn't quite up to the HD audio level.

A2 downsamples to 1.5Mbps DTS and the A3 to 768Kbps DD.

Perhaps, but those numbers do not tell you if there is an audible difference between them. Other considerations go into that.:D

Yeah, thanks mtry. From those numbers, without an explanation, one would believe there is twice as much audio information on the A2, or at least the ability to process twice as much info.

I've got the A3...it's great. I'm stepping up to the A35 (same price) for DD+ and True Dolby (as well as for video reasons) via analog!!

Thanks for the all the explanations guys. I thought maybe I had something wrong. I wonder why they designed the A3 to handle these differently than the A2....

Hard to say if they are differently designed unless you talk to the design engineer. Perhaps there is something in your receiver setting that looks for DTS first? Or, maybe in the player it has a default towards on of the signals more so than the other?
You need someone with knowledge of the coding protocols for the components. Not me:D

That's a really interesting phenomenon that I think explains something i've experienced on my own set-up. When I play Need for speed pro street on the PS3(the case lists it as a Dolby Digital game), my receiver decodes it as DTS so I imagine the PS3 does the same thing at least over the digital optical output.

Sorry for the slightly off-topic response.

Does that have a DTS sound track on it?
