Have two estimates from different companies on speaker systems....Need help...

One has mention Def Technology speaker system that has the subwoofer built in on the fronts. 2 fronts, 1 center, 1 surround pr and 1 rear.

The other suggested Atlantic Technology 4200 with a 12 inch sub. THX certified. 2 fronts, 1 center, 1 surround, and 1 rear pr.

Has anyone heard of these speakers? What is their rep? What are they comparable to?

I have a 35 X 15 ft HT room that I am putting them in.

Thanks!

Both are well known. Have you listened to either set?

Ha Ha

I was trying to keep the posts separate for "topics".

My speaker budget is 3,000.00.

I am talking about 1 front pair, 1 center, and 2 prs of surrounds and 1 sub

Thanks! OK one more question

If you could buy the Def Tech speakers with the sub's in the tower, or the Atlantic Tecnnology 4200's, or the AV123 systems...which one would you get?

Remember this is for a 35 X 15ft room.

Thanks!

I would buy the ones that sounded best to me.

Get out there and listen to all the speakers you can find. 3k is a good budget so take your time and listen to a bunch of them.

Look at:

B&W
Paradigm
Dynaudio
PSB
Swan
Warfs

I would stay away from powered towers. I do own a pair which are in the $5000.-- range with 400 Watt amps but I got tired of them real quick, I still do own them but they're hard to sell. I would go with full range towers and a sub.. They are great if you run a receiver, but once you start upgrading to processors and high end power amps I just think it's a waste of money. You can get a full range tower for half the price and with the other half you get a good sub and you'll be ahead of the game.

That thing is huge. I would almost rather go with two 15" subs rather than 1 18". I take it that a 130 watt amp is still sufficient to pressurize a large room with that thing? (I know larger drivers need less power to pressurize equivalent volumes.)
The sub I linked has a 900 watt amp, but if you want two 15's;

$500.00 pair (front)

$365.00 pair (surround)

$150.00 pair (surround back)

$195.00 (center)

$1600.00 2x15" (sub)

Zumbo,

In all the years I have been strolling around these audio forums. I have never seen anyone recommend Elemental Design speakers over AV123 Rockets.

I just offered a different system for 3k.

I am not an ID fan.

I spent 3k on my speaker system, but I am fed-up with recommending it. I will keep it to myself.

MADE IN CHINA will never, ever, touch HANDMADE IN GERMANY!;)

HDTVFREAK. There are lots and lots of good speakers out there. To add to the list: Paradigm, PSB, those German ones ;) , Axiom, Aperion (sp??)... They are all a little different and each will have its strengths and waeknesses.

See what you can find in your area and give them all a listen with material that you are familiar with. If you can, compare speakers in the same room at the same time. Its hard to remember exactly what speakers sound like.

Dollar for dollar I just think you can do better. That's just my opinion, that's why we are on this forum.

My towers retail for over $10.000.-- and are far superior to Definitive and I still don't like them. I do own them for around 8 years I guess I just grew out of them. Big mistake was to listen to Sonus Farber Stradivarius, now to me that's a speaker.
