I'd list the durability of it's amp section as a probable strength.

But it's EQ system will be better too.
The HK amplifiers are high-current, and use full complimentary matched devices. So yes it will deliver the excellant HK sound character.

The mentioned dual subwoofers are part of the Room EQ system which was done in-house by the Dr.Toole research team. It is very different and of higher-performance levels from the Room EQ software in the middle HK AVRs. The dual subwoofers are very unique as many of the competitors just put 2 subwoofer outs in parallel. Whereas HK derives unique sub 1 and sub 2 output streams after measuring the listening room's acoustic footprint.

End-result is a relatively smooth low frequency response for the listener's position, minimizing the low frequency resonances/peaks of the room itself.

Just my $0.015.... ;)

How do Harman Kardon receivers rate up against Denon, Onlyo, etc? My son works for a company whereby he can purchase infinty and JBL speakers at something like a 40% discount, and HK receivers for about 42% discount. I've already looked at an Onkyo 707 for about $600 but if I can get into a similar/better HK receiver for less, I'd go that route. Most likly the receiver will be powering SV STS fronts and SBS surrounds with a SV sub
Decent AVR , BMW thinks so! and for 42% discount not bad ;), but remember you can get pretty significant discounts on Marantz, Yamaha, Pioneer Elite, Onkyo Denon ,etc. ..also.

$1034 at 42% off = $600 Look at the Harman/Kardon AVR-3550HD 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver with HDMI V1.3a Repeater, Audio/Video Processing and Upscaling to 1080p normally $999 http://www.adorama.com/HKAVR3550HD.html

Good Luck!

That's straight from the marketing department. :p;) Does HK even make it's own amp ICs anymore?

They want to make it a well engineered product for sure. When that company sets out to engineer top of the line I don't know of many that can keep up. They just don't do that most of the time. :D

How much the Harman Kardon AVR 7550HD is going for? (Street price of course.)
I know that it normally retails for a whoping $2,799!

* For that kind of price, I'd rather get the Onkyo TX-NR5007 ($2,699 list).
Probably more like $1,999 street.

* Or the Onkyo TX-NR3007 for about $1,499 street.

And what about the new line of Harman Kardon Receivers? (AVR1600/2600 & 3600)
In particular the HK AVR3600?
I can pick the AVR3600 up for $650

The 7550HD has been shipping for about 2 months, SRP is $2,795. Don't know their distribution channels but the Amazon website did list its availability. You better check directly with HK for more specific details...

Just my $0.015.. ;)

We got a direct 7550HD demo from HK several months ago when we visited their Northridge, CA headquarters, its dual subwoofer Room EQ was most impressive.

Regarding power amplifier ICs, HK doesn't use these in their AVRs..

Just my $0.015... ;)

In the USA, almost nobody sells @ SRP..
I have seen the 7550HD can be had with discounts of 20-25%..
We have been using 1 for about 3 months and it has been doing fine, the Dolby Volume and Logic 7 are most impressive..

Just my $0.015.. ;)
So, at 25% off, that will make it $2,100, right?

Also, do you know the weight of it (in pounds, net, not with the packaging)?

* And I bet this is a great receiver too.

I have seen it on E-Bagger for about $2K but if you know somebody inside of HK then more $ off could be had..

Unit weight is 52.78 LBs

I have owned several HK AVRs over the last 25 years and this one is the best... :)
Build quality is excellant, and the amplifiers are very open sounding without harshness, it drives my 4 Ohms loudspeakers very well. I especially like the Dolby Volume feature and the Internet Radio. Regarding Logic 7 it even works with the HD audio codecs in 5.1 & 7.1 modes as well, very impressive.

Just my $0.015... ;)

Well, I would hope so (HK using discrete devices), in a receiver of that caliber.

Wow! 52.78 lbs. That's serious 'balls'!
Also, I firmly believe you when you said, "...this one is the best HK receiver..."

OK, about $2,000 for that monster, ain't bad at all.
(I'd love to see a comparison with the Onkyo TX-NR5007 though. :) )

* I knew they were using tubes a while back.
