Yes, she was smart enough and skilled. But still a youngster and as she is more exposed to outside society, she is or may be more influenced because of her isolation from the world until their departure.

Amazon’s showrunners make some interesting decisions for the sake of brevity, it seems. Parts of the story do seem rushed. I’ve had that feeling in some other of their shows, too.
