As a young man at that time I remember those times, and also the hope for democracy and freedom coming to so many more people. Expectation as well as fear of a war with Russia was greatly reduced, and this could even be seen in the reduction of the military forces in Europe. Sadly, that was not to last, and Russia is again a malignant neighbour.
