Stellar news! Although we've heard these rumours many times before, and only once did it become fact -- when Genesis joined Peter Gabriel back in 1983 (I think) for one show to help him out after he lost tons of money with his first WOMAD fastival. No, make that twice, I suppose, what with the 1999 remake of "The Carpet Crawlers" (I tell ya, I felt the ol' shivers down the spine, hearing that lovely combination of Peter singing with Phil singing harmonies again . . .). I would LOVE for this to happen. I always cursed myself for being born a decade (or maybe two) too late; I never saw Genesis perform in the early 70s. I did get to see The Musical Box, a Genesis tribute band, who recreate the early Genesis experience to an eerie degree, and it was extraordinary. I had tears rolling down my cheeks at the conclusion of "Supper's Ready", and complete strangers were hugging each other like they were old friends. Special, man.

Coincidentally, I just today (finally!) got around to watch the video compilation on DVD, The Video Show. Nice DTS sound! Subtle surrounds on some songs; heavy, aggressive surrounds on others -- loads of fun. No extras, which is not as fun. It just whets my appetite for all the CDs being reissued as multichannel SACDs (or is it DVD-As? -- can't remember) sometime in the near future. I get tingly every time I imagine "The Knife" or "Watcher of the Skies" in surround sound!

Anyway, enough babbling. Was there any indication that this would be a reunion concert or a reunion tour?

cheers,
supervij

I saw SEBTP in 74 and LLDOB in 75 then Peter left. They stand out in my memory as the best live shows I've ever seen. I saw Genesis many times after, they were great shows, but with PG fronting them, it was unbelieveable. Still not sure what I was seeing (or hallucinating anyway).

This would be a real treat.

I can't stand their music, so a reunion wouldn't do much for me.

You're not alone. I love nearly all 70s prog rock with a passion but never could stand Genesis.

Have not listened to Genesis during Peter Gabriel era, I know there are fine recordings but my very best Genesis albums are "And then there were three" and "Duke"
Let us see waht this reunion will bring!

Duke is the last Genesis album with Peter Gabriel, correct?

The last album with Peter Gabriel was 1974's The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Damn fine album too, although my favourite is still Foxtrot. Duke was released in 1980, and was the fourth studio album without Peter.

NOOOO! The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is.

If and when they reunite, I hope they include some new music -assuming it's good- and don't do what Yes did last year (35th Anniversary Tour).
I hope they come to Chicago, though.
The Gabriel years are definitely the best, though there are some very good albums after he left: ATOTT, some stuff from Duke, and even some stuff from Abacab. The rest is sub par for them.

Foxtrot is my favorite too, but VERY closely followed by SEBTP, and NC, then Trespass, TLLDOB, W&W, ATTOTT, Duke, in that order; after that, with a few notable exceptions, it's all commercial, which is not wrong in and of itself, but after doing the first 8 or 9 classic albums, doing "I can't dance" seems dumb to me.
I realize this is an audio site, I'll refrain from commenting any more.

Actually I still the We Cant Dance CD is excellent. No Son of Mine, Driving the Last Spike, Living Forever, Fading Lights (especially live) are awesome IMO. Though that CD does lack the fundemental Genesis sound from the late 70s.

Ah, old age is getting to the memory banks. :)

If Duke is the fourth album with Phil Collins and I assume And Then There Were Three was the first, what two came between them? Duke is the oldest Genesis album I have. I guess I'm not all that familiar with the Gabriel era other than the song The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Perhaps I've been missing something...

After 1974's The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, there was
1976's A Trick of the Tail,
1976's Wind and Wuthering,
1978's ...and then there were three... and
1980's Duke.

However, both released in 1977 was the live double album Seconds Out, and the Spot the Pigeon EP, which featured three songs that didn't make it onto Wind and Wuthering.

I'm glad that I held off buying the remastered CD issues (with the exception of Foxtrot), cos SACDs . . . here I come!!!

Hmmm . . . songs people might be aware of from the Gabriel era: "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", sure, but maybe also "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" -- that was a minor hit single for them back in 1973. Almost got on Top of the Pops, if I remember correctly, but they didn't like the promo video that was made for it, so the nixed it. I wonder how much bigger they would have been in England at the time if they had okayed the video (or simply made another one that they did like).

cheers,

Isn't that album just titled 'Genesis'? (I have it on CD). I recall seeing an interview with Phil where he said they titled it simply Genesis as if it were a debut album because they felt they were somehow starting over. A back to basics kind of thing (or maybe they just ran out of creative ideas for a title.)

I think you are right since he tried to dissociate with their older -Gabriel era- stuff once his solo career took off.

Sorry Rob....

Wow, u got to be kidding. I would have thought you may be a tad into Genesis type man????

Hmm, shows what I know.

EDIT:: What I mean is Genesis was certainly musical goodness.
Man, they rocked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Granted I was more of a Collins listener.
But Peter G. was great as well, and had some decent solo stuff....

I don't agree w/Gene on this one. I think "We Can't Dance" is okay (the kind of cd I'd burn from a friend, but wouldn't spend a dollar on. It does nothing to me (especially the closing of I Can't Dance with Collins singing "I can't dance, he can't dance..." I find it embarrasing). I think it's several levels lower than the first 8 albums; or probably it's just an entirely different genre that I don't like nearly as much. I read somewhere that at some point right around 1980 Collins talked Rutherford and Banks into "selling out", which they did quite successfully. To those who aren't familiar with the Gabriel era, give it a try, it's what made Genesis a household name. Start with Foxtrot, Nursery Crime, or Selling England by the Pound, if you get to enjoy "Supper's Ready" half as much as I do, you'll be drooling at the end. IMO is a masterpiece. On a related topic, I was recently browsing through a prog music site forum and you wouldn't believe how agressive some people get when discussing these things, it's funny and sad at once. People are much more civilized here (most of the time) ;-)
