Thanks for the links guys.

The Mirage OS^3 look good, cheaper then the OMD-5, but not useless in the bass department. I'm definitely concerned about the sound quality, but I'm not looking for 50Hz bass from my mains, they'll be crossed out at 90Hz.

Getting solidly down to 90Hz is difficult with tiny speakers; most are not up for it. And remember, if the frequency response of a speaker is listed as 90-20kHz +/-3dB, it is already 3dB down at 90Hz. If you are crossing over a speaker at 90Hz, the -3dB point should be below 90Hz. (And that is also assuming that they are not lying about the bass response.)

Obviously, if they don't specify a tolerance (+/- whatever), then the frequency response listed is basically meaningless, as in these cases:

http://www.canton.de/en/prohouse/plus/produkt/plusxs.2.htm

http://www.miragespeakers.com/na-en/products/os-sat-specifications/

It isn't easy to find a speaker with a woofer smaller than 5" that goes solidly down low enough to be suitable for a 90Hz crossover.

The closest I have seen so far is this:

http://www.kef.com/GB/surroundsound/satellite/hts2001.3

That is cutting it a bit close, though, and you are likely to have a dip in your frequency response at your crossover point.

Or even better:

http://www.kef.com/GB/surroundsound/satellite/hts3001se

(Notice, the woofer is getting bigger, which is the right direction for being able to work well for crossing over at 90Hz.)

Sheep, are you sure about this?
I found OS3 at $250, while OMD5 starting at $150... OMD5 have a bit more bass
(OS3 (minimal ?) is at 70hz while omd 5 - is at 60Hz +/-3dB

Oh I know. I'm in Canada, there is no such thing as deals. So the 150 is probably not even attainable. And, these are future considerations. I haven't moved in with her yet.

Pyrrho,

Both my current bookshelfs (Energy C-1, Energy C-50) can handle the 90Hz crossover. They use 5.5inch and 4.5inch woofers. I know everything you're saying. It's not an issue. If the speakers don't play down, the sub will play up, and be right beside the TV.

The KEF KHT1005.2 "egg" speakers supposedly sound really good
For their size, they do. But the KHT3005SE is orders of magnitude better. They can get louder, they image better, the treble is better controlled. Really, if I hadn't heard the KHT3005SE's in a blind comparison I never would've thought a speaker this small could be so high performing.

I don't like it as much as the KHT3005SE, but Tannoy's Arena lineup is also worth a look. Especially if you want a finish other than black or white. The bronze is particularly attractive, IMO.

Brain,

You surprise me. It's a just girlfriend for gods sake!!!
Buy the big a$$ towers you really want and tell her to get over it!!! :D (jk)

It's a shame you couldn't go a little bit bigger with the Usher S-520's. They were damn nice speakers when I had a chance to play with them.

I wish I had thought of saying that. A girlfriend need not be catered to, as you can get another one. But a wife is much more expensive to get rid of, and so with a wife, it is more understandable when one makes compromises.

So, my new advice is, be a man, and get man-sized speakers.

(I can safely say that, as I will not be sleeping alone regardless of whether you do as I say or not. ;))

Relationships are about compromise. You do realize what I get for downsizing my speakers right? You also realize I LIKE small speakers too. I'm not even giving anything up.

If you have an interest in the Energy V-Mini, check the Energy owner's thread at AVS. With a couple coupon codes, you can get the V-Mini's from Vann's for a really nice price.

There's a link I wish I hadn't clicked on. I understand you (Dave) to be a bit of a speaker snob and those speakers are exceedingly pretty. Then I raised my eyes to my BR-1's. I had never thought of the BR-1's as ugly before ... and the Ushers aren't too terribly expensive.

The only saving grace my BR-1's now have is that they sound pretty good.

Sheep, I'll be keeping an eye out for what you do get just in case my audio habit spills over into our bedroom system one day where the small form factor and appearance would be important.

the KHT3005SE is orders of magnitude better
... oh, I see ...

$$$

Sheep - definitely relationships are full of compromises... If you want to stick with H/T, Orbs are really nice sounding speakers.

Just to be different, and in the spirit of compromise, you can also move to 2 channel, this way you lose the big receiver, and extra speakers. You can stretch your budget by focusing on just one pair of high quality speakers. Since you mentioned a converstion piece type of feel, you can check these out!

Hey! Sorry I forgot about this thread. I am selling my whole set and going down to 2 channel with subwoofer. Right now I've beden trying to buy Mirage omni's but i can't get my hands on them. I also haven't had much luck selling the speakers as a whole. I had one, but he seemed to disappear, then another that wants them shipped to the states for only the fronts for lower then I'm willing, plus no boxes. They'll be destroyed by the time they get there.

If they don't sell I'll just keep it.
