Hello! I'm looking for help regarding the ohms ratings on the xl7f floorstanding speakers. In Genes review (see pic) of these speakers he cautions on the 4~8 ohms rating. My avr is Yamaha RX V781. I have not bought the speakers yet. I am on a tight budget and want the best sound for my money! I really like the looks of these and the reviews are absolutely great for the price point. Are these speakers with their low ohms compatible with my receiver? Any help appreciated. Complete noob, but an excellent reader

How much money would you like the best sound for? The Fluance XL7F probably isn't it. What's your budget, and where are you? If $500 and USA, then here's an alternative suggestion:

Ascend Acoustics CBM-170 B-stock (product page | measurements)
open box Monoprice 9723 subwoofer (review and measurements)

Then grab a pair of stands with whatever's left -- these, for example.

I guarantee that combo will beat the Fluance XL7F for sound quality, as well as for sub-bass extension and pretty much every other metric (except, perhaps, sensitivity). I think your receiver will be fine driving those Ascend speakers.

Hmm. You could be right about the Fluance, then. By the way, the Yamaha product page for your receiver rates peak wattages down to 2 ohms, so I think the Fluance 4-ohm load will be fine. They won't play a consistent 4 ohms anyway -- only in small ranges of the overall response. Just make sure your receiver is well-ventilated, nothing resting on top of it and it's not in a cabinet with the door closed.

Are you near Toronto, by chance? What do you think of these?

Thank you for the reply about the ohms, that was my main concern! Unfortunately I am nowhere near Toronto. I have been keeping an eye on my local classifieds, but my area is not densely populated and there is nothing. The Fluance have rave reviews everywhere. Do you think they will not sound very good?

I'm pretty pleased with my Fluance bipolar surrounds. It's just that when the Signature Series was released, I caught a few rumors of people expressing concerns about Fluance's quality control. But I have also seen that Fluance has made every effort to correct issues as they've been presented. Given that Fluance offers free return shipping if they fail the audition, I think they're a pretty safe bet.

If you decide you don't like them, maybe you could give Aperion Audio a try next, see whether they have any B-stock within your budget. Or the Andrew Jones designed Pioneers are another good choice for the money, although they need to be accompanied by a good subwoofer. One-star review on Amazon.ca notwithstanding, the Dayton SUB-1200 would be a solid choice for an entry-level subwoofer. The reviews on this page would be more worthy of consideration.
