Floored by the Yamaha RXV463

I finally pulled the trigger on the yamaha RXV463 i sold my older onkyo SR504 model. My room is small is less than 1500 cubic feet and quite reflective.

The onkyo sounded very harsh and lacked so much fine detail, i had to keep turning up the volume to get fine details on soundtracks and down whenever there was a major sound effect due to distortion. With exactly the same speaker positions and same distance and level settings as the onkyo the Yamaha soundly thrashes the onkyo in the sound quality aspect. The yamaha has a much lower audio noise floor and better amps which makes me just set the volume for a film and leave it there, the dynamics play out so beautiful and i never have to touch the volume control during the entire film.

I am amazed at how much of difference the AVR could make in my setup, as the level of detail i am hearing is wonderful. I feel bad that onkyo does not make their units like they did before.

Thanks to everyone at this forum for their help in making me choose this receiver.

There's another factor involved. There's nothing about the Onkyo that would cause the effect you describe. And Yamaha works no magic in the design or construction of their electronics. Something else has caused the phenomenon you described. It might be a defect or some damage in the Onkyo, but there is nothing inferior about Onkyo receivers.

After moving into a new house some years ago and buying some leather high backed seating for my sound room, I noticed some harsh sounds from my system. I tried moving speakers here and there, and even borrowed a friend's CD player to try. The problem turned out to be reflected sound from the seats. High frequencies were bouncing off the leather back of the seat at ear level. A little pillow solved the problem.

You mention your room is reflective. Perhaps you moved something when installing the new receiver?
