Thought id ask on here, my friend has some 12 yr old cerwin vega 38series floorstanders, one of the 15s blew, unfortunately he just pulled out the woofer and threw it away. I called cerwin CS and they didnt even know what speaker model I was talking about  . I asked them to find out for me if the speaker was just a sub or if it was designed for more than that, I also asked what the tuning of the cabinet was so i could find a suitable replacement woofer since my friend refuses to part with these. They said they would email the research dept and call me back if they had any info ofcourse i have not heard back from them yet

Any ideas, I could just replace both woofers but the guy has 5 kids and another on the way so he doesnt really have extra money for speakers, well his wife says he doesnt ..lol

Thanks
Oh one more thing , The floorstanders are 4 ohm but what ohm is the woofer, i can look on the magnet to see if there is a stamp that says what it is but if there is nothing how do i find out?

I've been trying to find out what one of my 12inch guitar cab speaker is, and using the number on the back plus google and ebay helped a lot.

It's a shame you throw it away, you probably could have had it re-conned for pretty cheap.

There has to be a model number, and someone (Tech Dept) has to be able to find out what driver it used.

It is really tough to change woofers. See if Cerwin Vega will tell you the Thiel/Small parameters of that driver. Also we would need details of the crossover.

There are two problems, aligning the speaker to the box, and retuning the box. The bigger problem is getting the same hand off to the mid range. So knowing the natural roll off slope of the original woofer and the other driver, especially the mid is crucial.

Your best bet is to find an original driver on eBay, working or not.

It seldom gives good results changing one driver in a set. If you can find a driver that can be tuned in the box, you often end up changing all the others, and the crossover needs significant change.

See if you can find the woofer in the Thiel/Small data base. http://www.thielesmall.com/database.asp#

You would think , but no luck, it seems they were bought out at one time and the didnt transfer alot of the old files, thats what they say anyway

If you really don't want to replace both woofers, dismount the woofer from the working speaker and look for numbers/specs.
Then look for a replacement woofer which comes as close as possible to the specs you could find. At least the impedance MUST be the same (if the speaker has a 4 Ohms impedance, doesn't mean the woofer has a 4 Ohms impedance). Also look for the type of suspension (hard/soft), it would be nice if you could find the volume of the enclosure it was designed for.

One thing you can be sure of, the speaker won't sound the same if you can't find exactly the same type of woofer.
But hey, he probably doesn't have time to listen too carefully with 5 kids running around the house ;-)
