Final step: a subwoofer for the dedicated stereo

I can attest to the fact that the SB-12plus is deffinately a musical sub, in the terms that it is sealed, tight and not sloppy whatsoever...

So you are saying that all those ported SVS subs sound loose and sloppy?

For the longest time SVS claimed that whether sealed or ported doesn't make a bit of difference in sound quality. It's very refreshing to hear SVS finally admitting they are wrong.

Actually this is the truth. Differences in natural response can happen depending on the driver and cabinet used, but in the end the misconception that a sealed sub is more 'musical' or 'faster' than a ported sub is just a myth.

So why is that people find ported SVS subs lacking for music playback?

While I am not sure who these people are as I haven't read this complaint very often before there are a variety of reasons:

1) Room interaction/placement - many people do not realize the huge impact that placement and room interaction have on sound quality. Improper placement of a subwoofer can cause huge peaks and troughs in frequency response that will make for a horrible sound. Also, standing waves within the room due to lack of or improper room treatment is another thing that can cause a perceived boomy sound.

2) Tuning frequency used - based off of the third party measurements I have seen of SVS ported subs some tuning frequencies create a larger deviation from linearity than others. *Speculation* This deviation could be perceived as boomy tendency by some depending on the frequencies being accentuated.

3) Placebo effect - Many people have simply heard that sealed systems are "tighter/faster" or whatever term you want to insert than ported ones. This simple queue could easily influence what the person thinks of a sub.

The list of possibilities goes on and I could make this sort of conjecture all day but I am tired so read the link I posted previously for some more in depth general subwoofer knowledge myths.

I would like to point out I have no love or hate for SVS and never intend on owning a product of theirs as I can build something for myself instead. I am just trying to clear up a common misconception found in the audio community.

Are you under some impression that I work for SVS?

Thanks avaserfi....

I can attest that I enjoy owning different designed subwoofers, and these are just my observations....

To go forward, I have to know where I have been... hense the learning process of trying different sub designs.....

I have enjoyed every sub that I have gotten from SVS, they are all different, and in my and probably many other peoples opinion being very good quality subwoofers in design and build quality. Look at their progression over the years and tell me that the new Ultra 13 is not a great sub...

Sorry, I should have said "SVS enthusiast..."

I wasn't aware that there are 2 subcategories of bass: waves vs. impact. Because it seems to me, if a bass is shockwave like in nature, it just means that it has a really high SPL.

And you still haven't answered my previous question, since you seem to really prefer the new sealed design. What's your opinion about those old ported SVS subs?

Good catch Aveserfi...

And also if you don't mind me quoting Ron Temple's thoughts in AdrianMills's thread about the Plus/2 alongside the Ultra13 http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showpost.php?p=357180&postcount=25

Nod. Subwoofers either sound good or they don't, and the "tightness" people talk about really comes from the lower midrange, which hopefully your mains are handling.

In your pricerange I would look on the used market.

Highly recommended:

Great subwoofer, especially for just filling in the low end. It won't stun small animals, but I bet you'll love it. If you need something bigger, there are larger M&K subs on there as well now and again. K-10s are great little subs though and won't break the bank. I'm listening to music on one right now paired with a set of Dynaudio Audience 70s and it sounds great. Blends beautifully, sounds great, small footprint, below your budget - sounds like a match made in heaven for you. ;)

I own all those old ported subs.. 2 - Plus/2's and 1 Plus They are awesome.
I don't prefer the sealed design over the ported, they both have their place and how people like to incorporate their different signature for different uses. I appreciated the SB12Plus... its a great and powerful little sub..

What I do prefer is extremely well made drivers, in a very well constructed cabinet. Ported and tuned low.... with a lot of power behind them to scare the hell out of people. At least that is my current project.. So I will tell you how they turn out when I'm finished..
