Ever watched a movie that changed your musical taste?

I was watching O Brother, Where Art Thou?, for about the 15th time on TV a few nights ago and got to thinking how much my taste in music was changed by that movie. I absolutely love Coen brothers' films. I first saw this movie in the theater and found myself enjoying the music as much as the movie. I bought the soundtrack (something I very rarely do) to the movie soon afterwards. Prior to the movie all of my musical taste centered right around alternative bands. Since then I've found myself enjoying various folk, bluegrass, and contemporary artists that I would have never considered listening to before. I know sometimes people hear a particular song in a movie that makes them rush out to buy the artist's album, but has anyone ever been able to peg a shift in musical tastes from a movie?

No. My musical tastes are set in concrete at this point. I know what I like and what I hate and I don't believe any movie can alter that.

Although my father took me to see "They Shoot Horses Don't They?" and the movie so depressed me that it was something like 25 years before I could listen to anything Big Band without associating it with that movie and having it sent me into a total blue funk.

Sid & Nancy. I listened to a lot of college radio, but that brought me a new interest in the Sex Pistols. I buy a lot of soundtracks and occasionally a movie score or two :)

I second the 8 Mile mention. Although I always did like his "The Way I Am" -- I always thought that was a brilliantly written song. But yeah, after I saw that movie, I realized that that boy's got talent.

cheers,

The Fifth Element

I'm not an opera fan now and never really have been, but the scene in the Fifth Element when the diva sings opera opened me up to the possibility of there being some good opera music out there. Oh yeah, and the movie was funny too.

Not really, can't say any film changed my taste in music, but 8 Mile did change my opinion of Eminem. This was the first time I really "listened" to what he had to say. Also the music in Chicago really helped me enjoy a film I did not think I would like.

Eminem has some very very impressive lyrics. It just seems that to hear them you have to find some of his unreleased albums, or listen to some of the songs that feature him, as most of the songs on his albums are retarded. And yes, 8 mile was fantastic.

I haven't watched a movie that changed my musical taste. But I have watched one that will forever change how I hear one particular song. Al Green's "So Tired of Being Alone." Ever since I saw Dead Presidents I always think of Chris Tucker's character, in that chair, dead from a Heroin overdose.
