Epik Going out of Business

I would not buy from a company that did that, and I expect a lot of other people wouldn't want to either.
Which is why most of the companies that did that originally don't do much of that anymore. SVS, HSU, etc...

ED was a completely different story as to why they went out of business.

I'm really out of it. Just found out that Elemental Designs is no longer around as well. What's going on with the sub business?!! I guess cost overruns on parts, labour, etc. Or that sales are slumping or too much competition out there.
Yes, but now you have http://www.powersoundaudio.com/ :D

Just emailed Rythmik. Thinking of maybe adding a 2nd sub in my setup. Have the FV12, but they changed it with the LV12R. They said it's the same as FV12, but rear ported instead of front. If I buy it, aesthetically, they won't match.
Buy two and sell the FV12 :)

Just turn it around ;)
Yeah I could, but then you end up seeing the amp. I emailed Brian and he said they don't do any custom work. I was hoping they'd still have a FV12 cabinet kicking around.

Yes, but now you have POWER SOUND AUDIO — Welcome :D

Actually, I might consider going with Funky Waves. They are local to me so I could visit the shop if need be. They are just sooooooooo expensive!!!

What actually happened to ED? I thought they were doing well with their line of subs.

I just found out three days ago. That's too bad.

The cabinets are well built. The drivers almost look cheap comparatively, but the result still ends up being good sound. The amps would be the Achilles heel. If my Empire ever dies I will upgrade but will definitely rebuild this one, likely passive with an external amp.
The external amplifier idea sounds very inviting.

On the face of it, that seems plausible. But, how are you going to address people who power your sub with 5000 watts when it is intended for only 700? What about people who add 12db of EQ boost using their 700 watt amplifier at 25hz and they cook the sub due to clipping they can't hear?

All the sudden you are getting trashed all over the forums for an "unreliable product" when it is simply setup problems and user error. When "the customer is always right" it makes things difficult even when they are totally wrong (like in my examples above).

That's why folks should simply buy SVS which have nearly bulletproof limiters :D

Amps are usually the first part to go in a powered subwoofer. Most companies know this, and it is often reflected in the warranties, with the amp going out of warranty first. (That is one of the reasons I like having unpowered subwoofers.)
Yup. That's why all of my 11 subs are unpowered subs. Most of the time the amps will die before the drivers do. :D

Speakers don't need amps inside them, and neither do subs. Outboard amps and EQs are just fine.

This is one practical example of "separates" over "all-in-one" boxes. :D

People who do that have the proclivity to break all sorts of things, powered and unpowered.

They know the risk.

People who do that may also use 5,000 watts on their unpowered loudspeakers. Yet most speakers are passive.
