My 3 reasons

While price is an obvious factor. I'll offer some other points:

1)Durability (my favorite ear buds have a replaceable cord. That always goes out first. I don't want to spend >$200 on earbuds that go out one year later because the cord shorted out)
2) Fit (a good fit not only feels right but gives the right amount of sound isolation and bass response)
3) Sound quality (It's got to sound good.)

Audio performance, linear response and low non-linear distortion

Sensitivity sufficient to get too loud before max volume on input device.

My favorite headphones, the Grado 60i, are in my opinion better than others I've tried because
1) they sound great, with a warm and balanced tone
2) they allow me to hear what's going on around me, and
3) the price/cost ratio was better than anything else I'd heard at the time.
