That said, if I was going to integrate my MP3 library to my system, I'd probably go with some sort of music server option. As it stands, I just hook up my Sansa, or a friend's iPod direct into one of the AVRs in my house (Via either the iPod USB connection, or just analog audio L/R) and use my existing sound systems to play music, if the need arises. I also have a set of small active speakers to use away from my main setups.

How important is an external audio system, when your TV sounds crappy?

1. How many TVs do you have in your home? I have two TVs (one of which, an old standard-definition CRT, sorely needs to be upgraded/replaced to anchor a new AV system from scratch in a guest room).
2. How many of them have crappy sound systems built-in? I think both of my TVs have crappy sound, which is why I believe an external audio system is so important to integrate with a TV.
3. How many of them are connected to an external audio system? Both of my TVs are connected to an external audio system because their speakers are no substitute for a full-range surround system. If my old CRT TV gets moved to a guest room to make way for a new HDTV where the CRT sits now in my basement, then the guest room will need a compact and innovative all-in-one audio solution, given that the room does not have the space for a full-blown surround system based on six or more speakers.
4. Do you own, or intend to buy, a stand-alone iPod speaker system? I am thinking about an iPod speaker system or an iPod dock to use as an audio transport.
