I use Terminator 3 because I'm very familiar with it to test surround sound and base parts.

DVD: Kill Bill Vol. 1 for the scene with the mosquito when the Bride's in a coma.
Also Finding Nemo, just for the lush music in there

movie:
for home theater 5.1 / sub test
finding nemo chapter 25 darla glass tapping
toy story 2 intro scene, street crossing scene
star wars I: pod racing
war of the worlds: basement scene: for treble clarity: water drops. rest of movie has good subwoofer tests as well.

music:
blueman complex dts 5.1 audio
lara / reyes guitar for 2 channel
warren bernhardt jazz piano acoustic midrange accuracy.
wynton marsalis joe cool. acoustic
janos starker: bach cello suites

i use the stringed music / acoustical ensembles to test the overall presentation. i think the acoustic music is much more difficult to reproduce accurately than electronic music.

thx

Typically not much for CDs - but for DVD the Incredibles is usually the first disc out. Now I add Star Wars III, Hitchhikers Guide, and sometimes a little Apollo 13.

The Incredibles really works it though - and has the video to back it up.

CD's= Ludacris- Red Light District (TONS of bass, as well as great mids and a steady mix of musical instruments)
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter I and Tha Carter II ( Bass again, variety of sounds and can see how quickly your sub can recover in between hits)
Stevie Ray Vaughn - ANY Guitar, enough said, the tell all tale of what a system can hit and where its high points and low points are

DVD's=
Fast and the Furious= Both for the car sounds, guns shots, as well as good music in it
War of the Worlds - Everything, guns, robots, explosions, perfect for Bass heads
Master and Commander- Cannons, the sound of the sea, bells,
Hero- Sword fighting, slicing of the wind noises, etc
Days of Thunder - Race track sounds great
All the New Star wars (and the remasterd ones)
